New build based around 3570k

Thread Starter
Hi all,
looking to upgrade from my 955 black edition to something with a little more umph. I've decided that the 3570k fits the bill.
My budget is under $450. Components needed are: CPU, CPU cooler, motherboard, and RAM. Everything else will be reused from last build. The leftover old parts will most likely make their way into a HTPC.
Here's what I've picked out so far...

CPU

RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233186

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157330

I'm a little iffy on the motherboard. I've never heard anything great about Asrock but Im loving the price. Ive been reading that the Z77 chipset is just plain great for overclocking but if someone has had a good experience overclocking with other chipsets I'd love to hear about it. I need about 6 usb ports total, extra would be nice however. I only have 2 hard drives so excess SATA ports aren't necessary. I'd like to be able to do crossfire with my 7870 tahiti sometime soon so two pcie slots are needed. I don't really care about bells and whistles, I'm really just trying to overclock this baby to the max. Something around 100 dollars preferably under would be excellent.

I've been unable to decide on a good CPU air cooler and definitely need some guidance in that department. I'd like to overclock as high as I can without blowing too much money on the cooler. It needs to fit in a midsize tower case that a Scythe Mugen 2 fit in if that helps.

I'd love to get this build together as soon as possible. I've been dreaming of an Intel build for awhile now.

I have the antec 300 illusion. I think I've decided upon the cooler master 212 evo. Any good?

Wow. Thanks. You've been extremely helpful.
Any thoughts on the Asrock Extreme4 motherboard? Seems pretty solid to me.

Why would you buy a 3570k for a new build? It's a last gen CPU

Avoid the Asrock z77 extreme4, it has an issue with supplying significantly higher vcore than you set and than it shows you

If you are on a budget the extreme3 should.be good enough for.ocing(remember that ivy bridge has heating problems due to the spacing between the ihs and the die,and also the bad quality tim under the ihs)so if you want more than 4.4ghz you need to delid(same happens with haswell )

Interesting. I think the extreme3 would be nice enough. I did not know that the extreme4 had that issue. I'm curious as to whether the extreme3 has the same issue.
As for the CPU I'm open to any recommendations. I'm considering haswell but was under the impression that it didn't overclock as well as ivy bridge?

Depends highly on silicon lottery and cooling.. Many chips can get over 4.4ghz with say 1.35v. Infact most of them can, you just need higher end cooling to approach 1.4v without delid

Likely.

It oc's a little worse on the high end (less chips scaling good to 1.4v+ i think), but it's basically the same if you're using 1.2-1.3v which most people especially on budget tend to do. There's a thread on OCN (haswell overclocking thread with statistics) which has over 100 oc's charted. It's a bit trickier than just changing a multiplier and vcore sometimes, so you have to actually read the guide and maybe ask a few questions which a lot of people have trouble with. There's a lot of undeserved bad rep, IMO.

You don't need to match clocks with ivy bridge to win in most cases. For a majority of loads, ~4.2ghz haswell is around equal to 4.6 ivy bridge. For some loads like video encoding, 4.2ghz haswell is about as fast as ~4.7-4.8ghz ivy bridge

Median OC on that thread with 100+ charted is around 4.5@1.3 on 4670k's, i believe

Haswell has only improved integrated graphics and idles lower. Its only abt 5% faster than Ivy, but usually Ivy overclocks higher.
