How to repaste my 590GTX??

Hey All,

I had a bright idea to remove my heatsink and reapply some thermal paste on my GPU... Well I leaped before I looked and tore the thing down to the PCB..

It really is not too big a deal it looks like I needed a reapply anyhow.. My question is on the I think voltage regulators what do I use Thermal Paste or Thermal Putty or are they the same thing??

It is still early and the Store does not open till 10 so I will patiently wait for an answer..

I did read I can reuse the pads on the Memory as they look fine for now.. I just need to know what to use on the GPU and Voltage regulators as they have something on it but would like to know If I can just use thermal paste??

Can you post a picture of said PCB? I'm a bit confused. Usually stock heatsinks use thermal pads for VRMs/memory ICs.

This is what a thermal pad looks like.

I once made the mistake of taking the thermal pads off of my 8800GTX's stock cooler. The heatsink did not make contact with the RAM and it would crash all the time. But I was young and dumb so I just fixed it by buying an after market Thermalright heatsink biggrin.gif

yes they have thermal pads on the memory modules but it appears someone used Paste or Putty on the VRM's (Voltage Regulators)

I will see IF I can find my camera..

The Nodes BETWEEN the GPU's heatsinks are what I am concerned with they I think are the VRM's?? this is the heatsink unit not the PCB..

Well after an almost all day search I have found what I need. Fujipoly Sarcon XR-Pe is what
I need and I can get it in sheets from Frozencpu.com..

Now I just need the funds.. here is the site where I found out what the GPU uses:

Well I received my parts in the mail this morning. I put the heatsink back on and when I started the PC the GPU Fan seesm to be spinning at 100%.. I am running MSI Afterburner but it states the fan speed is ONLY 40% but It sounds like 100%..

I am at idle and the GPU temps are around 30c for each GPU, I have a 590GTX.. So I double checked the plugs that go into the Video card I don't think they are in wrong the one is only for the lights and the 2nd one looks to go in ONLY one way..

What can cause the GPU Fan to be at such a FAST Speed when the Temps are normal?? I also tried resetting the Speed of the fan with my Profile but that neither slows it down or speeds it up it just seems to be stuck at 100% Speed??

OK after some headshaking I figured it out.. When I plugged the little fan plug back into the board the pins got pushed up and I guess the plugs for the RPM set did not get pushed down all the way..

I pushed them all down towards the PCB and when I booted up the Fan is now spinning at the correct speed.. I also ran Furmark and the Fans RPM went up with load increase, so it is fully functional now..

Also that FujiPoly pads I got is like a Putty so that was the original putty on there.. That stuff is really spendy too.. I am wondering If I should use that for my Pad on a CPU and the GPU instead of the paste??

Well if it was not for thebrightsideofnews.com I would never of found out what Material was used on the VRM's.. I also have my card currently clocked @730mhz with temps in the low to mid 60's with furmark...

I am thinking I can get more but I think I will wait until I get the Watercooled system inplace and a WB for my GPU.. in most of my games the temps barley get in the 50'sc.. which is a good thing..

the 590 is still a heck of a card that is for sure.. I seen a bench and it did a little better then a single 680 so it still has some life for my use anyhow..

EDIT: I just ran Furmark with a 682OC core and it peaked out at 68c on 1 core and 65c on the other.. I ran FurMark for like ten minutes.. not too bad for a bit of an OC.. it definitely will run cooler in my games as furmark runs the cores at 99% load..
