avg but I keep off. I will let it scan some questionable downloads on occasion. There is no anti virus that can protect you if you are not very careful as to what you install.

Well there is one antivirus that can. Hell, it's even made by Microsoft! It's called "reformat". tongue.gif

What exactly does the gaming mode of antivirus software do anyway? does it disable most everything and thus take up less of a memory/CPU footprint or does it just disable notifications and scheduled scans. My current (Ad-Aware free) is taking about 123,000kb of RAM in task manager. I'm trying to get the least overhead possible while still running something that has realtime protection.

Gamingmode only disables notifications. Rest will run in the background as usual. For me avast did it a few years. Streaming updates, browser script scan and realtime scan. Do not count is as advertising but avast, bitdefender are my favourites.

I have a bunch of Firefox extentions, and usually have Malwarebytes + random AV lying around but I usually don't use them (real time protection is disabled).
Reason beeing, I reinstall frequently (also I'm starting to use Unix based os more than Windows), use lots of virtualization and do manual checkups on whats running on my host machine.

But if it hasn't been mentionned before Hijackthis is great (not meant to protect you however).

I have Bullguard for the family as I got a good deal on it and they are not to tech savy haha.

But I generally issue Security Essentials (anti-spywear) and Malwarebytes free (anti-virus) to clients without any kind of protection.

Besides, this "stragegy" does not protect you until you reinstall so you could have been leaking information until then.

Besides, rootkits beat reinstallations.
Once again...
