Can someone please clear the air for me? (:

Hey everyone, TL;DR at the bottom.

I haven't been following the computer world too closely since building my last rig in January 2011. However, I am currently in the market for a new video card, and as such, have been poking around the internet reading various articles pertaining to the Nvidia GTX 780, 780 CLASSIFIED, 780 Ti, TITAN, TITAN BLACK, and GTX 790. As a result, I am confused as hell.

I am currently running two 1.5GB GTX 580 video cards in SLI and it's performing fairly well; there isn't any game I can't play on maximum or close to maximum settings at 1920x1080. However, I'm getting really aggravated with the current status of SLI -- it seems that most games I play require some type of tweak to attain maximum performance from the cards, or, in some cases, to even activate SLI.

With all of that being said, I am still not anti-SLI. If I find that two of any currently available video card is going to outperform everything else, then I'll deal with the aggravation. Nonetheless, I've been reading up on the GTX 790, and it intrigues me. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a straight answer as to what set-up will be the most viable. Will a GTX 790 be the best thing to buy until the next series of cards is released? Will two 780 Ti cards in SLI be the way to go? Is the TITAN BLACK enough on its own?

I have a lot of questions, and I haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for. On top of everything else, will my current system be a bottleneck for these higher end cards? I'm still running on the P67 socket. My motherboard only supports PCIe 2.0 -- will that hurt me?

TL;DR:

Is there one article that accurately explains the differences between the various types of 700 series graphics cards from Nvidia? Also, will my current computer affect the potential for said cards?

Thank you.

In response to your TL;DR, I will offer you one as well.

Don't waste your money and just get a 780. The rest are jokes.

Thanks for the fast reply!

I'm leaning towards the 780 Ti. I'm not too concerned with the price difference, but I would agree that from what I've seen, the 780 would be the best bang:buck ratio. Anyway, I have two options:

  1. ASUS
  2. EVGA

The ASUS card is definitely sexier, but the EVGA card is factory clocked slightly higher and I've had nothing but great dealings with their technical support. I noticed that the ASUS card has something called DirectCU II for keeping the card as cool and quiet as possible. Does EVGA have a similar technology that's just not listed? If they don't, that would definitely be the deal breaker.

EVGA 780ti classified would have my vote, good cooler, lots of overclock options etc. BUT... they're just about to release a 6GB version I think so maybe hold off a couple of weeks.

Oh, and EVGA customer support is generally considered to be superior.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into that. I'll see if I can't find a release date for the 6GB version.

I can't see Nvidia releasing a 6GB 780 Ti as that would essentially just be a TITAN BLACK, so I'm just going to grab the TITAN.

EDIT: Thanks for all of the advice, guys.

Unless I'm missing something, that's a regular GTX 780 6GB, not a Ti. Or are they actually planning to do the 6GB Ti in the future?

I'm curious about that, supposedly NVidia had purposely crippled the 780 and 780 Ti so that it couldn't have more than -5- GB of VRAM, so as to not step on Titan/Titan Black's toes. I guess now that Titan's have dried up, they changed their mind. LOL.

That being said, I'd get a Titan Black with 6GB before I'd pay $800+ for a EVGA 780 Classified w/6GB if for no other reason than to get 1/3 FP64 instead of the 1/24 FP64 the 780/780Ti has.
