Looking for some general getting started advice.

Hey everyone,

I just registered my first domain name and I'm honestly not sure where to begin. I'd like to build a website with a blog component and a few other pages to post games I make or projects I'm working on and want to offer for download. It will be pretty simple but I want the ability to make it more complicated as I go.

Now I'm almost a complete novice when it comes to web development (I spent a few weeks getting an app to communicate with some server code written in Django, and I've helped build a site using Drupal) and I'd like to get a bit of a road map for what to learn. I'm also thinking in terms of my resume - I don't want to learn anything too esoteric to matter to employers.

So, long story short - seeing all the tools around makes my head spin. I don't know if I need to learn a scripting language, or a markup language, or find a CMS or a web framework or what. So in your opinion, what should I be working on learning? Is it worth learning to write raw HTML or does nobody do that anymore? Or should I focus on learning PHP? Or Javascript? What do I need to learn to go from an empty page to games and a blog posted on a nice looking site?

I hope this question isn't out of place here (this is my first post on overclock.net in a long time), and feel free to be technical (I have a lot of programming experience, just nothing online).

Thanks.
