Why didn't you play it earlier?

Everything "sucks" nowadays as time passes by.

Nevermind boredgunner. I think i got it. I just extracted the "game data" folder to the following directory.

....\SteamApps\common\STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl

I'll let you know if I have any other questions.
post #13 of 29
Although Shadow of Chernobyl was the first game to be released, it's actually Part 2 of the chronological order of the storyline with Clear Sky being the first part and Call of Pripyat being the ending, as well as the last game to be released.

1) Clear Sky
2) Shadow of Chernobyl
3) Call of Pripyat

I didn't play Shadow of Chernobyl until all 3 games were already out and in hindsight, I wish I had played them in the order I listed above, as the story makes a lot more sense once you know the back story of Clear Sky going into the start of Shadow of Chernobyl. In a way I envy you. You really are embarking on one the most immersive and awesome game trilogies of all time. Turn out the lights in your room, take your time and explore everything, everywhere, it's a huge map with anomalies, artifacts and better gear and weapons stashed everywhere and try to do ALL the side quest by talking to everyone...that isn't shooting at you. lol
Enjoy ! thumb.gif

Before I started on Shadow of Chernobyl, I really thought about which one to play first. I wasn't sure which one came out first and I looked up a few things on Wikipedia. I ended up choosing SoC mostly because that was the one that the game developers released first and I figured they did that for a particular reason. Now that I installed the mod, I have to start over from the beginning anyway so I just might end up going with Clear Sky first....decisions, decisions.

Seriously, play Clear Sky first. It's Part 1 of the story, you're going to play all 3 anyway and if you do it this way, you'll be glad you did once you start Shadow of Chernobyl afterwards as you'll already be immersed into the story and know what's going on and why.

This isn't true at all, my favourite example being F.E.A.R. I played it for the first time in 2011, and all it did was remind me how crappy modern games had become.

As for S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I only started that in 2012 and It didn't 'suck' either. Gunplay and movement is a bit clunky and the game is full of bugs, but the negatives are more than compensated for by the positives, like the game's incredible atmosphere and lighting.

Don't forget to edit fsgame.ltx with notepad. You have to switch the line
Code:
$game_data$                  = true| false|  $fs_root$|              gamedata\

to
Code:
$game_data$                  = true| true|   $fs_root$|              gamedata\

in order to load the mods.

@ boredgunner

Did you create these mods yourself? Can't install the mod for Shadow of Chernobyl for some reason. I've got the mod installed for Clear Sky successfully installed, but SoC is giving me fits.

Here are some screenshots:

"XR_3DA.exe caused Access_violation in module "D:\Win_7_Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl\bin\XR_3DA.exe" at
0023:0042E224, CServerInfo::AddItem() + 2180 byte(s)"

@th3l4st0ne

Thanks for the tip. In my file, it's actually:
Code:
= false| true|   $fs_root$|
I changed it to:
Code:
= true| true|   $fs_root$|

Are you using the Steam version? If so, verifying the integrity of game cache should fix the problem. I forgot to mention; the mod includes a modified dll that increases grass draw distance, but it only works with version 1.0005. Steam version is 1.0006.
