Although I play some Neverwinter with my wife, (she likes WoW but I refuse to pay for two accounts monthly to casually walk a world, and Neverwinter fits the bill perfectly), Rust has been my game of choice lately.

It's currently still in Alpha, and is 20.00 on steam. I'm very much considering buying the full version, the game is pretty fun. Private servers, moddable, survival RPG, sort of like a cross between Far Cry 3 and Minecraft. It's pretty dependent on the server you play on and who's on it. Built in mic support allows you to talk to anyone in range of the distance your voice would normally carry. Day turns to night and if you don't have a torch or flashlight, you won't be able to see. You can die to wolves, radiation, falling from a cliff, bleeding out, or a bullet to the gut. It's definitely worth checking out.

I'm sure people don't mention Rust because it's in alpha. A bunch of other games are in alpha on Steam too. Why pay $20 for an alpha? I paid $30 for DayZ alpha access, they are slow to fix anything. It's too risky to pay for a game that is still in alpha and there's no guarantee that the game will be finished in a timely manner or even finished at all while the developers already have your money. If the developers really want people to play and give feedback or find bugs they should open the game up for demo during alpha/beta.

It's like investing with extremely high risks. Why pay for an unproven product? Why should the users bear the costs and risks of the developer in order for the developer to be successful? That's my problem with paying for games in alpha. I'm sure many do not want to pay for a game that is unfinished no matter how many features they claim they will develop for the game.

Yeah, you could look at it like that. And I get that.

From my perspective, a game is designed for me to have fun. Some games are "finished" and priced at 60+ bucks, and suck. Others are 20.00 and have screaming potential, and are fun to play right now for 20. I've been having fun with Rust for a few weeks. There's my 20.00 worth right there...if devs drop the ball and the game flops...oh well, at least it didn't suck. If the game takes off, loads of new content is delivered, and the community explodes....well that's just a straight win. To me it's a win either way.

I'm a big fan of F2P games, and I play a lot of them too, Neverwinter included. But sometimes when the game you want isn't free...well it's a decision to make I guess. This is why IMO game marketers should allow you try before you buy. Let me see for myself if the game is worth buying. If I like it, I'll buy it! Don't swindle me in with huge promises only to find out your combat system is boring and unrewarding, or your game is designed around devs making money on a real money auction house, or just doesn't "feel right", as some games have all the necessary ingredients to be great but for some mysterious reason- just aren't fun.

That being said, I have had the opportunity to try the game free so far. But as good as the game is already developed while still in Alpha, I'm strongly considering buying.

I see paying for an Alpha as essentially crowdfunding like Kickstarter. I paid for Starbound recently and have had more hours of enjoyment from that unfinished game than I have had with most "finished" milked to hell $60 subscription/DLC games in the last few years. I would just rather take the chance supporting 2-3 indie kickstarts/alphas than I would on a AAA game these days.

Not that it's a rule or anything. I am excited for ESO in a couple weeks and that's full price + subscription. You can just tell from the beta how much attention to detail and heart went into the game, and I find that enjoyable to play no matter what all the WoW-whiners think. Same for Witcher 3, CDP put a lot of passion into their games and I have no problem paying full price there either. And then on the other hand I am looking forward to Dragon Age 3, despite it being EA and the BF4 debacle. Going by what I have seen and read the developers working on it ("Bioware" no longer exists in my mind) are putting a ton of effort into it.

So I guess for me it's about finding the games that were made passionately by people who want people to have fun, rather than by people who are looking to maximize sales/metascore. Good stuff is still out there, you just need to find it. IMO wait until AFTER a game releases, and read reviews that are made afterwards too. Pre-release reviewers are paid off and are obligated to give games high scores, generally. Though it is best to try to find a blogger/reviewer who you find has similar taste in games and media as you.

Play Skyrim. So much content and once you've completed it or got bored with vanilla, get modding! I've probably added over 50 hours to the game through adding various mods. You can probably pick it up relatively cheap too!

There's no point in playing vanilla Skyrim.

I have been playing the Persona games and just picked up Infamous: Second Son the other day. Loving it. Playing as a god is so cathartic.

I feel to me that gaming is not as exciting anymore because you have probably already played something very similar. Before, everything probably seemed NEW. When you played everquest you probably never played anything like that before. Same for Warcraft 3 and some others mentioned here.

I know for me COD4 was awesome. First real multiplayer with leveling up and class unlocks etc etc that I had played. Now I couldn't care less about that.
C&C was my first RTS, now stuff like supreme commander 2, Starcraft etc are fun, but definitely not as sucked in as I was.

But if you compare them side by side, the newer games are definitely BETTER, YOU just arent as into them because you have seen it all before in just a slightly different manner.

Thats my take on it.

Rust, Dayz, and other such community driven experience games are fun for the first couple weeks but they get old after you have built your massive metal building, or gotten the top loot gun etc.

Yeah, it's a common trend these days to drop AA for better lighting.
I prefer AA over lighting, and even shadows so I didn't like that they chose to do it that way.

Firefall is developing precisely the way I had dreamed.
(reminds me of Stars Wars Galaxies pre-CU)

Looking forward to trying EverQuest Next.

That is all.
