I feel like gaming is getting ...... - Page 9

Your 1st roller coaster ride (well provided it wasn't a kiddie ride) is a blast .... after that it's pretty much all downhill (pun intended). When ya start anything, it all seems new and exiting .... after that it's all pretty much "more of the same" . Why do we see remakes of movies ?..... because all the stories have been told already and everything is now either a remake or a variation of a previous theme. I have to laugh at some outlooks on various games. For example, can't help but chuckle listening to how this or that war game is so realistic and then people avoid getting killed by each other by mashing the jump key and pogo-sticking all over the place. I pay close attention when watching movies like Apocalypse now and I have never seen soldiers exercise such behavior.

I have enjoyed many single player games and as a genre, it remains my favorite type of game. However games with major "bosses" I find irritating as picking a series of random strategies till, after dying 22 times ya finally figure one that works is just silly.

I will say that I have played one MMORG since 2004....tried others....didn't last more than a few hours. I take my 6 month vacations now and then, in the middle of one now. I played pre-beta, 1st beta, closed beta, 2nd open beta and with three (or was it more) owners since. The game is enormously complex with regard to crafting and building your actions which you do by assembling a series of bricks and balancing them against costs. After 10 years, I can say I have not cone close to maxing all skills (I think about 25 of the 63 skill trees I have mastered .... 39 of which are crafting. Obtaining the best gear is accomplished not only by finding rare items which are a combination of drops and harvested items which are available in only certain seasons, weathers, time of day. That's only part of the effort though as developing recipes can involve experimentation and tweaks developed over months or even years.

Most importantly is the community which has an average age of > 35. If you enjoyed WoW, then this game is not for you. Used to eb three servers all with different approaches to the game. On the NA server, peeps ignored game mechanics and the "neutral faction" kinda came into being whereby if neutral player ventured into a PvP zone, both of the warring factions, would leave them alone. It was the player's respect for other players wishes (no one going "Hey you're ina PvP zone so I can kill you, hah ha") that gave those uninterested in PvP a place to call home and led to the player base stability. I had a conversation one day with a player new to the game who had trouble with this concept....."well if I don't kill you and get to this resource first, how am I gonna get what I want ?" My answer was "have you tried asking ?" The player was absolutely dumbfounded and didn't know how to respond. I gave him a set of uber armor, PM'd a guildoid and got him a sword ...and within 15 minutes we had him all geared up with everything he needed.

It does not have a large player base.... during an event last week were 290 peeps "in the region" the event was taking place. And the game has changed..... the merger of the three servers (French, German and NA brought three different communities all of which had a different idea of how the game should be played. What was socially acceptable on one was not on another..... where one server was very role playing oriented even some getting upset if you want OOC, the other servers were not. So there have been some growing pains, but much smaller than ya would think for such a merger of 3 distinct communities.

The storyline is going thru a significant turn and I can't say that I can help there as I haven't been in game in about 3 months..... even when I am, I might gain 1 level in a particular skill and as we like to joke, gain 7 levels in "chat". So if ya looking for something with a older, calmer, more relaxed setting give it a try ..... it's free to level 125.... if ya wanna gain skill levels after that will cost ya $10 a month. Available in German, English, Spanish, French, Dutch and Russian Languages.

http://ryzom.com/

If ya want help getting geared up and a little tutoring, contact Azad in game. the "Fluffy Bunnies" spend a good part of their time in game, as do others, specifically helping new players settle in. Tell him ..... "FF sent ya". Again, it's not for everybody .... if you have ever practiced or used the word "powned", it's not for you. But, won't cost ya nuthin to try it out.

Can't be any worse than a game about a certain Buster Sword wielding, grating, self doubting whiner that so many gamers fell in love with in 1997. I'll concede that western games are also rife with bad storytelling.

this is one of the biggest reasons why i hate JRPGs though. your right. but its not the main charc that does this.
its usually like a side charc.
the main charc has usually has confidence, and a goal they are set to get.
(think FF series, kingdom hearts, rogue galaxy, etc etc)

however, what i like about JRPGs is the fantasy aspect. theres so much things that you can do.

build magic, build a melee, use special moves. etc etc etc. also the storyline is pretty good.

now this sounds like the game im looking for.

how is the player base in this? (alot, little, etc etc, are there alot of new / medium playeres, or are everyone already uber strong with max lvl and stuff already?)

also can u give me more information about having to pay?
so whats the max level? and how "restricted" will you be if u dont pay? (for example like since 125 is the max u can get w/o paying, will you be at a significant disadvantage?)

Well in that case, I miss Dragon Seeds. But that may have just been nostalgia in the earlier years of life too.

I have a perfect copy of FF7 and FF Tactics. Two of the only games I paid a premium price just to "collect". That being said, I don't go back to them much. Newer games are holding my attention more, despite not always coming out with revolutionizing differences I haven't experienced yet, such as the materia system or when I first met DOTA on Starcraft. I'm sure new ideas will continue to come that will change things enough for a satisfactory "new" feeling, but yeah, it has been a while since I have experienced that.

Maybe embarrassingly, maybe not, one of the games that felt very new to me was the Sims series.

PoE was/is fun, but I've played all the Diablos, and they use the materia system.

League/DOTA is fun, but I played DOTA in SC...

Fallout 3 was fun, but I've played GTA and again, Diablo, so not much was too new here either. But this may have been a little nicer, and did hold some of that nostalgic feel to me.

Rust is fun, but I've played Fallout 3, Far Cry 3, and Minecraft.

All these games are fun and I've had a blast with them, so for me it's not so much the fun I'm missing. It's that "new" feeling I just haven't felt in a while. Everyone replicates the same systems in different ways. I'd just like to see a few new concepts come out I'm not familiar with to quickly compare to another game. When I first saw the FF7 materia system, I didn't have anything to compare it to to say, "oh, they did it just like this game but made it better!" I simply said, "Now that...is a great idea!"

Of course the new feeling is gone. Its called getting old, you tend to see patterns emerge in just about everything, and know where it leads. Hence miserable old man thread!

basically, the game that im looking for is something similar to Runescape.

I really like that game when i was a kid (lasted me ~~6 years)

there was so much to do.
you can go PvE, go lvl up skills, go duel for stakes, go PvP (and the pvp was worth it, you actually get something from doing it instead of other games where you just fight and thats it)

I played PoE for about 2 months and i quit. i like the game, but theres nothing to do but just fight monsters over and over and over and over and .... you get the point. (which is why i also hate diablo series)

I tried other MMO like tera, and aion, but the like 90% of the players are already veteran players. theres no "new" people playing. also, the game is, again, PvE only. (PvP seems useless, and only point is to see "whose stronger")

even to this day, i still think runescape was like the perfect MMORPG. (I even want to get back to it, but last i checked, the game has changed way to much, in addition, you mostly have to pay for membership for the game to be playable/enjoyable)

EDIT: am i being way to picky in the games i play? or maybe its time for me to quit playing games and move on to other things?

JPRG is Japanese RPG

They are single player aventures with characters that are precreated, essetially a playable narrative experince, usually with turnbased or Stats base combat.
They involve playing through a large highly indepth story that usually includes detailed cinematics and beautifully crafted character developement.

The best JRPGs of all time were Final Fantasy XII, and the Xenosaga series(Ep1 2 and 3).

Nowadays they are so rare and under appreciated.

Xenosaga was essentially a half movie, half game, and had the most indepth and incredible game narrative of all time. It was far richer than any games today are.
Seriously there isn't a single game today or previous with a more indepth and interesting and layered story as Xenosaga's is.

Old school Runescape was great.
It was so simple yet it had enough stuff to keep you busy with skilling and questing for countless hours, and PKing was tons of fun.

I'm getting real sick of these dual faction MMOs, and never really liked classes.
In Runescape, you could do everything on one character and play with whoever you wanted.
It was so nice being able to choose whether you were going to use Magic, Ranged or Melee each time you set out to go PvP in the wilderness. Most other games require a completely brand new character, and lots of leveling required to get to a point where it would be worth playing.

Let's say two random people become friends.
They play WoW/AnyotherecentMMO - It's likely they're not going to be able to play together without making a serious effort, depending on what faction/realm they chose.
They play RS - No matter what they chose, they will always be able to play together within a minute.

I've been looking for another game like RS for years and haven't found one that has the same kind of character/class situation.
