Feeling the need for more

Thread Starter
Recently I upgraded to a nice set of AKG Q701s to replace my cheap headphones. Though the sound quality is great, I want a bit more volume from them.

My question is, do i really need to spend an additional $100 and buy an external DAC or would I be better off saving the money and buying just an amp ( Schiit Magni ).

I am currently running of my on board sound, and though I know that sounds like a bad thing, ive heard that its great for being on board. I have the Rampage 4 black and the listed sound equipment specs are as follows:

•SupremeFX Shielding Technology
•Cirrus Logic® CS4398 DAC: 120 dB SNR, -107 dB THD+N (Max. 192 kHz/ 24 -bit)
•TI 6120A2 high fidelity headphone amplifier (same as the creative zxr)
•WIMA® film capacitors
•ELNA® premium audio capacitors
•High-fidelity audio OP AMP(s)
•Differential circuit design
•NEC TOKIN UC2 audio relay

I dont know much about audio equipment but it seems as though that paired with the magni should be plenty to give me what im looking for, or is there something else im overlooking when it comes to sound cards?

A modi and magni would be a really great combo if you can afford it. If the budget's a bit tight however, just get the magni, you'll definitely notice an improvement. You can always buy an external DAC later.
