Roles this server will need to Perform.
1.File Server (8 Nas Drives)
2.Transcode 1080p Blueray (May Have this covered more on this)
3.24/7 Operation with Wireless Ac onboard.

Right now I was looking at few cases from Enermax and cooler master but I need it to be something I can put in a corner or basement.

I will have a Evga 680Gtx Classified 4Gb as my Transcoder in this server. What I was wondering is which boards would suite my needs atm. Im looking for boards that have hdd boosts like some I seen.

As for cpu wasnt sure which will be better for everyday file serving
This rig should be mid tower if possible with enough drive cages for least 8 Hard Drives. Wont be needing using dvd Burner.

Features im looking for in this build.
1.Usb 3.0
2.Least 8 Hdd drive cages.
3.32gb ram capable
4.Mid Tower If possible
5.good raid card for 8 Hdds.

Thank you guys for all tips suggestions on last rig. Now its time to clean up network section.

Parts I have set for rig.
1.Evga 680GTX Classified 4Gb
2.Samsung 840Pro 256Gb (Boot/Os)
3. Corsair 1200i Psu
4.Zalman Clc Cooler
5.6 Noctua NF-F12 Fans
6.8 Wd 4TB Red Nas hdds

GTX 680 for transcoding what exactly? 1080p x264? lol, no...

That transcoding is going to require a semi-decent CPU.

Why on earth do you need 32GB for a simple homeserver?

840 Pro for what? The thing is going to be idling or transcoding you don't need a SSD...

USB 3? Why?? 8HDD cages in a midtower??

I'm sorry man, but you honestly don't have a clue what it is your trying to achieve and what you're going to need for it.

Thread Starter
I listed parts I had available figured id list what I had and work around it. If they are usable parts great if not then they can be sold off.

Ill be first to admit servers are not my area hence why I asked in here. Like my main Rig I thought putting high end hardware in would help but it will be idle bout 2-3 days a week.

Wanted server that was over killl for simple things till I get more comfortable working with server side of things. And only reason I wanted mid tower with 8 Hdd cages is so storage wont be a problem for few years.

Are any of your answers actually meaningful? People typically know how to use Google. (maybe not properly, but they should be able to find "home server builds" or something)

OP: Get an Intel Quad, 8GB of RAM, a couple of large HDDS (you are gonna want to look into RAID, perhaps something with parity to keep things backed up). You don't need a graphics card. All that 1080p transcoding stuff is done by the CPU.

I don't know if any midtowers come with an 8cage HDD bay... unless it has like no front 5.25 bays. And that would have to be a BIG mid tower.

The guys coming to an online community with real people looking for answers. Not Google.

I think I can speak for OCN when I say we appreciate what you're trying to do, but hosting every thread reply to some URL googled wanting to earn some rep or something is not what people are looking for.

Thanks.

A SSD is pointless in a home file server. He won't be storing on it, traditional benefits such as faster boot/shutdown time don't apply.
