Which OS for a GTX 750 ti (game + mining): Windows 7 or Windows 8?

Hi there,

I intend to update my rig with a newly acquired GTX 750 ti, to play some games and mine a bit. I will certainly overclock it.

My question: i run currently on Windows XP, but as the support is ending and it's not handling directx11, i will move to either win 7 or win 8.

And i would like to have your advice on this choice. I seem to remember somewhere in this forum that miners got quite a few kh/s more by switching from 8 to 7, but at the same time, i would like to try the new interface and be ready in case directx12 is supported by win 8, etc.

Additional question: if i choose win 7, which version? Is there a difference of resource consuming between home premium, pro, and ultimate (not necessary processes for gaming & traditional use running in the background?).

Thanks smile.gif

If you go windows 7, I'd get at least Pro because of less hardware limitations on things like RAM.

That being said, go Win8 imo. The hate is mostly unwarranted and windows 8 has many benefits like REALLY fast booting up and shutting down, better usage of SSDs, gets more updates/support, and you'll likely see things like Dx12 and whatnot show up on newer windows OS like 8. It's actually pretty good. It's also lighter on the system, consumes less storage space, and uses less RAM, improving game performance slightly. Testing shows that games tend to perform a bit better on 8 on average, too.

I would also recommend 8. It's a fundamentally improved operating system over 7 in a great many ways. There are always trade-offs with every OS upgrade, but I would consider 8's benefits to greatly outweigh it's limitations.

Beyond that, Windows 8 has downgrade rights so you can revert it to Windows 7 legally and without purchasing an additional license. Windows 7 does not afford you the ability to move to Windows 8 for not cost.

well as it seems the issue with GTX 750ti and win 8 compare to win 7 for mining is related to multi-gpu (5) and i intend to only use 1 or max 2, i think i will choose win 8 then. Any last recommendations?

I can confirm from experience that games perform better on 8, with that being said, I just switched back to 7, was tired of all the bull crap that comes along with windows 8.

Battlefield 4 takes a noticeable performance hit on windows 7. When I restored this past weekend, I had to unpark cores because my game was choppy and I had to edit the registry for the game to recognize I had premium installed. Didn't have to do any of this with windows 8.
