Why has Nvidia just discovered these new ways of getting massive boosts from simple driver updates after AMD just releases a way of showing Nvidia up? I just feel we could have all enjoy much better performance alot earlier, but Nvidia just holds back what they really can offer us and just release what they have to. This if anything is great for their pockets so they can keep pushing out slightly improved products to stay that little bit ahead, but is bad for developments and pushing what games can provide.

I suppose we should be happy though

Time and money; prior to Mantle coming out Nvidia had no motivation to spend the extra time and money to really wrench on drivers. Now that AMD has lit a fire under them, they are going to be doing this sort of thing.

DX12 was coming, Mantle making an appearance or not. If Mantle did anything it is to move the release window up a little bit, but DX12 wasn't created just to combat Mantle.

Yeah, this really is due to AMD's movement. Huge props to them.

They more or less moved certain anti-alaising operations from the CPU to the GPU in DX11.1 which must free the rendering thread a bit. They also optimized shader tracing, so it's not really low-level but it does show that there are lots of overheads and left-overs.

A lot of these reviews understate how pivotal this kind of close-to-metal improvement is because it will give programmers and developers massive CPU headroom which can be implemented in different ways. These API improvements are close to being the same as going from a HDD to an SSD.

On thief its 4 fps compared to the previous drivers. They fixed their profile for thief nothing else. On star swarm i dont say anything because any time that you run it you get a different route based on the AI so its impossible to compare

Wth they used thief mantle with 14.2? Thats why they only get 55 fps.14.3 adds support for mantle
