[pcper] NVIDIA Talks DX12, DX11 Efficiency Improvements - Page 4

finally we get some performance movement from both companies amd and nvidia in the PC market. Free performance from our current GPU's is something all of us should be cherishing. Especially since recently high end GPU's prices seems to be soaring and $500 for high end seems to be becoming standard.

Can't wait to see DirectX12 with Windows 9
my SSD is PARTITIONED READY !!!!!!! biggrin.gif

Why has Nvidia just discovered these new ways of getting massive boosts from simple driver updates after AMD just releases a way of showing Nvidia up? I just feel we could have all enjoy much better performance alot earlier, but Nvidia just holds back what they really can offer us and just release what they have to. This if anything is great for their pockets so they can keep pushing out slightly improved products to stay that little bit ahead, but is bad for developments and pushing what games can provide.

I suppose we should be happy though

This is exactly my thoughts. Hence why, competition is good for everyone. I myself would still like to see Mantle going toe to toe with DX.

I know there is more performance left to be had, and it looks like nvidia may finally be willing to give it to us.

A 780 @1300mhz performs more than 15-20% better than a 770 at 1300mhz

Luckily I got my r9-290x for free. Because if I bought it I would feel like I got ripped off. My gtx 760 served me well the time I had it . But it over clocked like crap it couldn't even reach 1200 MHz...

Nice to see MS aren't the only ones pushing for improvements since Mantle. Thief is still very much an NV favoured game even prior to these drivers though. I was able to hit 93 FPS on a single Ti where as the 290 users once also overclocked moderately couldn't break 80fps in the built in benchmark whilst under Mantle.

Look forward to testing the drivers.

What basically happened.

AMD released Mantle and NVIDIA rushed with Microsoft to promote DX12 that does EXACTLY THE SAME in terms of "talking closer to the hardware", well, give or take details and some unavoidable architectural differences.

HOWEVER, there are important factors, possibilities we must consider.

1. OpenGL has a "draw multiple calls without involving the CPU" method since 2011 as an ARB (a 'soon to come/already supported in most drivers' feature). That method, along with some other new tricks (of around 2011 again) does most of the benefit of Mantle, if not better. NVIDIA promotes this. See this video, towards the end of it especially, the cool dude's presentation: http://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2014/03/20/opengl-gdc2014/ (beware, if you're not a nerd on 3D graphics with some coding experience stay away).

2. AMD may have "stolen" those (public) ideas before they were made "too" public so they took some early undeserved glory. Besides, the OpenGL methods 'soon to come' are out (and working in most drivers now) since 2011.

The OpenGL extension for "draw multiple commands without involving the CPU" as proof from 2011: https://www.opengl.org/registry/specs/ARB/multi_draw_indirect.txt

BTW, many scientists of AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, Qualcomm and other Khronos group members are not at "war" as we make it seem here. e.g. the OpenGL above that basically does a large part of Mantle's benefits is submitted by AMD!

What's going on the market and what we see presented or 'coming out first' is another matter.

There is another possibility. Microsoft pushing for OpenGL to stay behind but by doing so, hurting others not get OpenGL's cutting edge features. Hence AMD may had been fine with an OpenGL 5.0 but they eventually gave up and made Mantle, coupled with their desire to have a monopoly on "fewer draw calls" (nobody is perfect).

article states it is not game specific, but will shine in games with heavy CPU overhead issues. Maybe ARMA 3 will start to run better. wheee.gif
