Best portable headphones under $100?

Thread Starter
Hi OCN

I'm looking for some over ear closed headphones for my daily commute. I currently own some Ultrasone Pro 550's for my desktop and some Klipsch S4s for the gym. However, now I am looking for that sweet spot in between earbuds and huge studio headphones.

I actually really like how the Beats Solo HD look, but could never bring myself to buy them. Looks are one of my main concerns. I don't want excessive branding, coloring, or large form factor... And for some reason I cannot find any headphones like this besides the Beats... I also would like a single, straight cord without buttons on it for audio control... To me an idea like this sounds simple, maybe why Beats are so successful... They have mastered the aesthetics but not particularly the sound stage.

Brands I'd prefer to get are Audio Technica, Sennheiser, or Sony, but I can be swayed otherwise.

Does what I'm looking for exist?

Thanks in advance!!

I have these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?gclid=CMHgy66Eqb0CFY3m7Aod2wEAZQ&Item=N82E16826249125&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Headsets+%26+Accessories-_-N82E16826249125&ef_id=Uy8GCQAABA2BRwEh:20140323160425:s

execpt they say kingston X on them. they aren't to big and they ride very well. Good sound but has that mic mute inline but the mic slides into the left speaker so not much a concern.

The Creative Aurana live would be my suggestion. They look a little cheap though, so if you want something that looks more respectable you can get the denon 1001

They are the same headphone. The CAL is just a rebrand of the same headphone. With the denon though you get slightly better build quality and a better looks for a couple extra bucks.

Headphones are portable speakers.

and earbuds are just small portable speakers that sit in your ears...

On the question, the most obvious answer is probably the ATH-M50 being as they're right on-under your budget from your preferred company and don't look terrible. Unfortunately they will probably come with a coiled cord or a long straight cord, short straight cords and headphones don't really mix.

if he can find M50s for $99 they are great.. very sturdy and great sound.

the newly restyled ATH-M40X is right at $99 and comes with removable cables now.

I own the M50s and love mine... I also own a pair of Takstar HD5500 headphones which I am very pleased with I ordered mine from MP4nation on sale (came to me in 2 days from HK) included hardcase and carry pouch and free brainwavz headphone stand mine cost $60 but they are more like $75 now

http://www.mp4nation.net/headphones/headphones-earphones/takstar/takstar-hi2050-hifi-monitor-headphones-1

not as bullet proof as the m50s but has removable cable and mine are holding up fine...I feel like i need to be more gentle with them however... great sound quality.. the earcups could be bigger however

there is of course also the ever popular Sony MDR-V6 /7506 in budget also (avoid cheap ones off ebay as they are almost certainly fakes however).

and shure 440s

if you have a guiltar center near by you could likely hear the shures, sony 7506's and the Audio Technia ATH-M40X and M50X (the M50X would be awesome and a worthy investment but much over budget ...redesign of the M50 (mostly the same... but now with removable cable) but cost like $170~ right now

Sorry I'm not very clear on my audio lingo. I guess what I'm really looking for is an over-ear headphone, but definitely on the smaller scale. A true commuter headphone, lightweight and portable. I've been looking at the Sony MDR-10R and I feel like it embodies most of the characteristics I'm looking for... However the sound stage has questionable reviews... But what am I really expecting sub $100?

Through my crappy research, I've come to the conclusion that what I want exists, but not at the $100 price point... More or less $200.

Thanks for help guys I'll update this thread when I've made my decision. Definitely have more research to do.
