Worth an Upgrade? HD 7870 > SEE OPTIONS

Hey all,

Quite curious on something. At the moment my HD 7870 is great, however sometimes it struggles on BF3 and ARMA.

So I am wondering, is it worth my time to upgrade it to an R9 280X? I mean will it struggle less at 1080P?

Because I am also looking for power consumption and quietness due to my resolution and games I run would it ultimately mean the card will work somewhat less compared to my HD 7870 making it run slightly cooler, quieter and less power hungry?

Not sure if it works like that or not smile.gif

Cheers all.

The 280x is a rebadged 7970. It will be less power efficient, but should yield somewhere in the ballpark of 40-50 percent more performance at 1080p.

Edit: also, your cpu is holding you back in ARMA most likely.

The CPU is more than likely holding you back.

The 280X isn't 40% faster is it? I was thinkin more like 20%

It's usually 40 to 50. It's just a rehashed 7970 which was about the same.

I downgraded to this CPU knowing it isn't as quick but didn't realise I'd be enjoying ARMA so much recently tongue.gif

My CPU is at 4.6Ghz, still trying to get it higher, temperatures are good for 1.428v.

My GPU can clock to 1100/1450mhz fine (1000/1200 stock) but it doesn't nudge the frame rates at all really. I know my CPU is holding me back but ideally want good frame rates in other games too smile.gif

The R9 280X I am looking at is the cheapest VTX3D variant there, I believe it has lifetime warranty. £199/€328.

Which can cost a lot more. I used to have a OC 955BE with a 7970. Ran Day-Z mod perfectly fine.

Yeah I've only just downgraded from my I7 to get some cash back.

My Thuban @ 4.0Ghz ran ARMA and BF3 peasy with my 7870 smile.gif although doesn't Thuban have a lot higher IPC than Piledriver?
