Classy vs. 290x

Hey all, I'm putting together a minor build (~$1500) and I'm trying to get a good value graphics card that is also pretty high performance. I was originally going to get a 290(x), but with the skyrocketing prices of GPUs due to the mining craze, I've reevaluated my options. I can't decide whether to get a 780 classy or stick with a 290x. Newegg has the classy at $550 which I think will outperform a reference 290x, for roughly the same price.

So it comes down to, do I go with AMD, which has mantle and is on the newest architecture, or go with the Classy, which has proven to be an outstanding card and even more so at the current price.

Thanks!

I would vote classy mostly for pricing reasons but with the 800 series coming shortly (hopefully) depending on your situation you might want to wait it out

The 780 Classy won't outright lead the fps battles with the actual title selections playing a part but once you OC it a bit ~1400 you'll see it pull away a bit more. I say you're getting the better package overall with the 780 classy if you aren't into mining.

Mantle is still climbing uphill to be proven effective as I've seen it, it depends a lot on your particular setup with higher end configurations not seeing the best of yields yet.

Wouldn't be disappointed in either choice but I vote for the classy, we'll see what 8XX brings.

if youre putting a classy vs a reference cooled 290x i would get the classy.

if you can swing an extra $20 or whatever it is for a non reference 290x then i would get the 290x.

I haven't heard much about the 800 series. What are the rumors, if you don't mind obliging me. I would seriously consider it if it is in that $500-$600 range, but if they overprice it like they did the 780 at launch, I'll probably just go with the Classy.

880s will probably be in the $650 price range like the 780s, maybe even more because its nvidia...why not.

thjey probably also wont be out until october/november.

op, the classy may very well oc higher than the 290X to match it. around 150 - 200MHz over the 290X.

btw, evga has an upgrade program for a 780 6GB and rumor has it even for the 780Ti. get a 780 3GB and use the program.

I am currently at 1080 but will be getting 1440 in the coming weeks. I want to max everything basically. I want to get something that will last me a generation or two as well.
1440p the 780 and 290x still both do very well in. im guessing this will turn into a 3gb vs 4gb of vram thread very soon, so yes...3gb of vram is perfectly fine for 2560x1440.
