Classy vs. 290x - Page 2

If you want high res patches, modded graphics(skyrim-like),or you use demanding games with more than 8xMSAA,get the r9 290(there is one from xfx, check pcpartlist)which comes with bf4 free and has similar performance to the 780gtx

Do you use any professonal applications?

With 1440p, I think I've very rarely give over 2gb vram. I am able to try and test for anybody that wants me to.

Nope, no professional applications. I guess the main driver in this is price. I realize that getting a non-ref 290x is obviously better, but at the current prices of $650+, I'm not sure 5-10% fps advantage is worth over $100. Also, szged, I'm not worried about 3gb vs 4gb. I know I'll probably never even get to 3 gb of VRAM usage, especially because I have no interest in 4K at the moment.

I would definitely recommend the classy since it gives you ample overclock headroom to surpass the 290x. You won't need the extra 1gb of VRAM so the classy is the better card since it has a much higher price/performance ratio thumb.gif

the only two games to push me over 2.5gb of vram used on the 780ti have been crysis 3 with everything maxed out 8x msaa @ 2560x1440 and metro LL, same settings.

My thoughts exactly. I'm just not sure about the future of mantle and whether it will really turn into something worthwhile in the future...

Not looking enormously positive right now especially with the soon to be released DX12 and all three major graphics card manufacturers supporting and plugging OpenGL.

Aftermarket R9 290s are hitting $470 or less now (i.e. http://www.amazon.com/MSI-290-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-GAMING/dp/B00HPS4AFG)

The R9 290X however is still sitting $550+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131548) so I'd say a GTX 780 Classified for $450- 550 is a better value

the difference between the 290X and the 290 is 60MHz. oc the 290 an add'l 60MHz.

3GB is enough, though . . .

http://www.overclock.net/t/1424464/benchmarking-thread-batman-origins-benchmarks-are-up

but i recommend a similarly priced 290.

edit: you had a classified before? what happened? here compare it . . .

That was a build for a friend. I haven't had the cash to build a rig since that point. He like his Classy, but I wasn't certain I wanted to go that route since the 290's are on the market now. I changed the build log for what I'm going to be building in the future...I should probably change the name... tongue.gif
