Hey Folks,

I have been lurking on OCN for sometime and have really enjoyed what I have seen here. I am starting a new case modding project with my son, and wanted to share it with the community.

Background:

My son really enjoys being on the computer. He uses for both school and for relaxation. After seeing all the great project log, I got the itch to start modding again. Since this was for my son, I wanted him to get his input and involvement with this case modding project. He was definitely excited to help out.

Our goal for this project is to build a clean water-cooled gaming rig. Lets see how it all comes together. We both want an awesome looking rig when we are done, but I really want us to enjoy case modding together. I hope everyone enjoys this Father and Son Project.

Table of Contents:
- Update 1: Case Selection and Inverting Motherboard Tray
- Update 2: Inverted Motherboard and PSU Backplates

Update 1: Chassis Selection and Inverted Motherboard Tray

For this case mod, we will be going with the classic Silverstone TJ07 chassis. There have been numerous awesome TJ07 case mod and my son was able to check of all the great rigs for ideas and inspiration.

Here is a few pics of the case we will be using:

Inverting the Motherboard tray

Since the TJ07 chassis is so modular, we wanted to flip / invert the motherboard tray. Flipping the rail was pretty straight forward. The frame already had the screw holes pre-drilled and tapped. We unscrewed the rails and moved it from left to the right side.

The challenge we had is the rails for the tray are not centered. We couldn’t just flip the motherboard tray and call it a day. We will have to design and fabricate a new motherboard back plate. I gave my son a drill, and he had fun taking out the pop rivets. Once the rivets were removed, we put the motherboard tray in the rail for safe keeping.

We have started designing working on the backplate. Once we get it done, I will do another update post. I hope everyone enjoys this project.

And I hope your son enjoys it equally! Looking great so far! TJ07's build have a special place for the majority of us OCN'ers!

Update 2: Backplates -

As I mentioned earlier, I wish we could just simply rotate the motherboard tray and call it a day. Since the motherboard tray wasn’t centered, I had to design an inverted motherboard backplate.

Once the backplate was removed from the tray, I quickly designed a prototype. To save time and money, I make my initial cuts using a foam core board. Here is a picture of the foam core board and the original backplate. I wanted to make sure all the hole and dimensions lined up before I made an acrylic version:

Here is a picture of an acrylic backplate designed to fit with the inverted motherboard tray:

This TJ07 was a little different than the ones I have modded in the past. Typically the PSU mount is vertical. This came with a horizontal PSU Mount.

Since we plan on putting the radiator on the bottom part of the case, we wanted to make the PSU sit vertically. Here is the acrylic horizontal PSU Mount we designed:

Here are some pictures of the prototype inverted motherboard and PSU Backplate installed. These are not the final or finished products. These are just templates. We will be tweaking the looks a bit later to match the theme of the case biggrin.gif

I hope you guys enjoyed the update. More to come soon.

Nice to see a father and son team doing a TJ07 build.
I admire that you're making your own plates for the IATX mod, rather than taking the easy way out and buying pre-made parts.

I think that was the extra "redundant" psu mounting plate that you had on there though, which is why it was horizontal.
As shown in this review:
www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Silverstone/Temjin_TJ07/2.html

The templates for your custom plates are looking good.
Subbed.

Hey DerComissar,

I checked out your TJ07 and it looks great smile.gif I am planning on doing many of the same things you have done. Hopefully it comes out as good as yours.

That's very kind. I was fortunate to be able to get a lot of the custom panels from the aftermarket, from such sources as ColdZero.
But I really do admire those who make their own pieces for their builds, as you are doing.

There are so many possibilities with these cases, and you've already got a great plan for yours.smile.gif
