should I wait for x99, and comments on my build?

Thread Starter
Well, I finally decided to replace my desktop -- a trusty dual xeon x5365. I've upgraded just about everything as far as possible... it still works fine, but I'm getting the bug for another project. I've dedicated $4k to this, so I'd like to build something that is somewhat (and I use this word loosely) future proof and as high-powered as I can make it...

After catching uptoday on the state of processors/chipsets, I have a few questions:

1) should I wait until the haswell processors are refreseed? I'd hate to plunk down $1000 on a 4960x, only to have it bumped to second place in a few months. When are the refreshs coming, and what is the consensus?

2) should I wait for x99? I know it has more usb 3.0 support and a few other nice things, but is it really a significant leap worth waiting for?

3) most importantly, will the current chipsets support broadwell? will x99? That alone is probably worth waiting (I've read tha x99 will come out second half this year?)

thanks!!

And while I'm at it, here are the specs I cobbled together for my build.. before learning about x99/haswell refresh:

case: corsair 900d

PSU: thermaltake 1220m

Mobo: Asus Rampage Extreme Iv (is this worth the extra $$, or just go with a x79 delux? Am I going to regret taking the plunge now when the ne chipsets come out in a few months?)

Chip: Intel i7-4960x or i7-4770k

cooling: corsair hydro h110i

GPU: 2x evga GTX 780/NZXT G10

I would definitely wait if your budget is 4k.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1475599/engadget-intel-flaunts-8-core-extreme-edition-haswell-with-support-for-ddr4-memory

Enough said?

Also, many believe the 8xx series to be out soon, as they are offering many rebates and discounts on the current lineup.

*sigh* just when I was read to write out a check...
any thoughts on when it will be released?
by 8xxx, you mean NVidia 8xx? I assumed that would happen, just not that soon, as the 4k monitors eat current crds alive.

any chance x99/8xx will be released in the next few months? I know I'm being impatient, just don't want to wait until the end of the year

Haha, well maybe that 4k can turn into 5k by the time everything is said and done!
Yeah I meant NVidia. Speculation for 8xx is as early as April, and they already have 8xx m chips out. So not too much longer on that front.

For intel, I have only read around around the beginning of Q2. If you could stand waiting for just a few more months, I think it would be worth it, and you could save the buyer's remorse for a few months until the next greatest thing is out tongue.gif

The thing I like about waiting for the next best thing, be it parts, a car, or phone, the old best thing just became even less outside my price range. A few more years of next best things, and I'm looking at a nice new toothbrush! biggrin.gif

I would seriously wait until X99 is out for a few months and good boards to start being released. Keep a solid X79 or Z87 build for now, and wait for the goodies to make it to market! thumb.gif
