http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds/0_20

But for me i somehow couldn't install windows with my SSD in AHCI mode (bsod while the setup was starting) so i run my SSD in IDE. Which makes like 90% of the guide impossible to do. But in IDE it already was a huge speed boost so i didn't bother spending a lot of time to get it running in AHCI.

Defragmenting is a waste of time SSD. It's also recommended to keep some space free to increase lifespan of your ssd, but i actually don't even know if that's really necessary. There is a benchmark going on where they test how much writes a 250 GB SSD can take and last time i checked they were over 300 TB writes and all drives were still doing fairly well. I don't think you have to worry much about wearing your SSD out.

Without ahci you use trim support I think
post #143 of 177
Without AHCI you lose Trim and a bunch of other things. You can enable AHCI mode after you install windows by editing a registry file.

Wait, this is only relevant if you can't install windows in ahci mode with the ssd right?

Yes, initially you should install windows while in AHCI mode. Windows will do everything automatically then. If you can't use AHCI like the guy before posted (BSOD) then you can install in IDE and then force a switch later within the registry.

If you're on windows 7 an SSD is much more viable in my opinion, on windows 8 the OS loads from a 7200rpm HD in 15 - 20 seconds anyway, the only game I'd consider an SSD for personally would be BF4 but then you're only seeing 10 - 20 seconds improvement depending on the map still. If you have plenty of spare budget it's a different mater, of course.

Bf4 was to expensive for me...

I'd say the 10-20 seconds is attainable in many games... I have a RAID0 array of 7200s and I get read speeds of 80-100MB/s and there are plenty of games which take 30+ seconds to load. If you can load them at 500MB/s that's almost 25 seconds taken off the loading times.

It's £25 on Amazon, much cheaper than the £40 odd it is on Origin, they also have a 24 hour return policy now (which I originally used after the launch version of the game was so buggy) and the game is in a much better state now than it was back then overall.

Might be worth waiting until BF4+Premium is £20 odd like BF3 ended up after 2 years though.

Your raid 0 should be about 160-180 read depending on your drives. I know mine is decently high but bf4 still takes a little bit to load. Not nearly as long as a single 7200 though

Tempting...

But I'm not really in the mood for another FPS game at the moment tongue.gif
I'll stick to League until I get bored with it.

It depends on what part of the disk I read from... But in most cases it won't go over 120 read or 100 write.
