Previous PC gamer, whether to switch console gaming?

Thread Starter
I've always been a PC gamer. Sold my RIG 2 years ago because i needed the cash. Now gaming lightly on this lappy in my sig.

Also I've always been bashing consoles when there were PS3 and XBOX360 on the market. Because they sucked real hard graphics and controller-wise.

So looking at the new consoles, do you think the situation has changed? I really need some insight on this because i don't have thousands of dollars anymore to slash on shiny new hardware every darn year (yes, i'm so poor now) so i might get on console gaming bandwagon if things have changed positively.

So please bear with me:

Do new PS4 controllers provide enough accuracy for FPS games? Last time i checked it took several secs to bring crosshair to the bad guy. Such a fail... Please tell me they fixed this.

Is PS4's hardware powerful enough for rich graphics and most importantly is it future proof? I have 1080p, 45" LED screen in my living room and i'd like to play games @ 1080p with it. Can PS4 give me that?

I noticed PS4 games are soo bloody expensive compared to PC. Is there a way to get them cheaper? (Like steam deals?)

Thank you in advance guys.

1) It's always going to be less ideal to aim with sticks.
2) Probably.
3) Probably not.

I probably play XB1 more than PC these days, even though it pains me it has 50% less GPU cores than the PS4 sitting next to it and aiming with sticks is as horrible as ever. It's a bit of a different experience though really from PC gaming, if you're looking for a the-same-but-cheaper type of setup you probably won't be that satisfied.

My back's been hurt for almost 8 months now, so I try to play games on my laptop. When I physically can't, I play Halo or something on my Xbox. PC gaming in my mind is definitely a more open and free market with more titles available but if you want some good downtime games, there's nothing wrong with some console.

Both have positives and negatives mate thumb.gif

Mouse will always be better than analog sticks, especially if you go out of your way to set stuff 1:1 and improve your muscle memory - there's simply no way for a controller to compete with ~10-50cm/180 sensitivity levels on a solid mouse sensor in FPS, not even close

PS4's hardware is that of a somewhat low end PC. They have 8 cores, but they are low clocked (1.75ghz?) and of AMD's mobile jaguar architecture, so CPU vs CPU, it'd get slaughtered by a modern i5 (or even fx6300)

The GPU is somewhat equivelant to a radeon ~7850

A lot of Ps4 games are going for 720p@60fps, or 900p.

1080p is 2.25x 720p and about 1.44x 900p, so it's a significant compromise on resolution - they give up quite a lot. If you're advanced enough to build, it's a pretty hard buy IMO.

This is one of the bigger incentives for a low-midrange PC build

You'll naturally find lots of bias asking PC users from a PC, but i think a lot of people are in agreement on the ps4 vs a budget PC being a much less favorable choice for the console, than say an xbox360 vs a budget pc a solid 6 or so years ago

True dat.

Aiming with sticks is worst thing ever. I tried connecting my laptop to 45" LCD and played Skyrim with Logitech gamepad (just to simulate console gaming experience). I felt like 5 yr old kid just discovering how to play games, looking at my feet, shooting arrows to allies etc...

Really? I have been a console gamer most of my life and I am most comfortable when I can plug in a controller for skyrim and virtually any other game. I have a PS4 and I can tell you its not lacking for power. I'm playing Infamous second son right now or I I like to call it: Massive Particle Effects the game. As for the PS4 controller in shooters you would always want a keyboard and mouse but I have to had it to Sony: the DS4 is the best controller I have ever used. I have even taken to using it when I PC game over my Xbox 360 controller.

Maybe its a talent thing. I'm not good with controllers.

Thank you in advance guys.

FPS games on consoles incorporate aim assists, so in general they're accurate enough as a controller. Getting headshots requires more effort, but with practice isn't so bad. It still can't hold a candle to mouse aiming though.

The games released for the platform will be written and optimized for such. Basically if they write the game to be playable at 1080p it will be. Likewise the quality of graphics will be adjusted to facilitate the playability. If you look at current games, there are some websites that do comparisons between PS4, XBone and PC graphics. Most of the time the differences entail shorter draw distances, lower res textures, and simpler shadow effects. If its done properly you shouldn't notice the difference while playing. Also, the games released in a couple of years will look even better because the programmers will start pushing the platform more and optimizing better.

You're not going to be able to buy new copies of the games any cheaper. They set the price high and it only goes down when nobody is buying anymore. If you wait a month after release you can usually buy used copies, but new titles are usually only $10 less or so.

Basically, if you want to game on a budget, console isn't a terrible option. You're guaranteed to be able to run the games without upgrades for the next 5-7 years. Choose it if you can put up with the shortcomings of the controller and GPU, and the exorbitant pricing of the titles.
