ASRock X79 Extreme9 RAID controllers

Thread Starter
I plan on purchasing this motherboard for my new PC build. There are some things I am not clear on which I would like to check before going ahead.

I will be using an SSD for my OS and two HDDs in RAID 1 for data like media etc.

I see I will need to use SATA3_M2 and SATA3_M3 for the two HDDs in RAID 1, using the Marvell controller (I assume this is superior to the Intel controller)

What I don’t know is which port I should use for the SSD if I want to use NCQ.

Can I have different settings for each controller, so AHCI for the SSD and then RAID for the HDDs?

Also should I install the SSD first, install the OS and then plug in the HDDs afterwards and set up the Marvell RAID?

I think it should be done as this.

Intel Controller: I would put the SSD and set this controller to AHCI.

Marvell Controller: Use it for the 2 HDD's and setup this controller for RAID 1.

Should be correct. As you can set AHCI and RAID, IF you have two controllers. I've heard that 3rd party controllers such as Marvell and etc (other than Intel) may have problems with SSD's.

May I am misunderstanding, but I thought this board comes with two independent onboard controllers

Yes. Your board has two independent on-board controllers. Therefore you can setup AHCI on one controller and RAID on the other controller. Just remember to set the RAID on the Marvell controller and the AHCI on the Intel controller. That's the best way to do it.

IMO I think thats a pretty overkill motherboard. It definitely has two controllers.
