cd drive started smoking...

Any help will be greatly appreciated, if it's in the wrong section please move. Thanks.

Alright, so about 2 months ago I had a faulty gpu now I'm wondering if it may be my psu. I also have faulty case usb ports which if I have more than 2 connected to the front case it starts glitches out and not detecting them properly...

But today was the kicker, I had noticed my graphics card fan had developed a ticking noise, I had the side panel off and looking and listening and after about 10 minutes I noticed the LEDs start dimming on the case, then I smelt smoke, then I noticed smoke coming from the case. I thought it was the gpu being faulty, the first faulty one didn't smoke or anything, just powered off and black screened but I thought here we go again.

So I returned the windforce 290, came home and I have a 4770k so I have no display without a gpu. But decided to turn it on to make sure nothing smoked and the lights didn't dim, but soon as I turned it on heaps of smoke came out, lights were going on and off, the smoke was coming from near the cd drive and near all the usb headers.

I disconnected the Cd drive took it apart and can't see any scorch marks or anything. Turned the pc back on without the cd drive and it's running fine albeit with no display or gpu but it's not smoking or powering on and off.

I guess I don't know if the case is stuffed, the psu is stuffed or the cd drive. Is it basically just guess work from here?

Cheers.

I would suggest disconnecting everything from the PSU except for the ODD. Then with a paper clip bridge out the green terminal to a black one on your 20 / 24 pin ATX plug (the big one that goes next to the ram)

Then power up the PSU by the wall socket. You will see quickly if it is faulty.

Oh by the way if your PSU is of a decent make it will have plenty of protection built in.

Cheers for the advice man +rep. tbh I'm not to keen on sticking paperclips anywhere lol, I have seen that advice before and know it's trustworthy, I'm just not keen on doing it, plus the odd is now in the bin, the psu I'm using is a corsair tx 850, I would have thought it should have shut off when it was smoking?? Wasn't to far away from a fire I don't thin judging by the smoke and all the led lights going off and on but the game was still running..

Don't like the idea of a paper clip, THIS plug will do it as well thumb.gif

Your PSU will be OK. I have tried, yes tried braking cheap no names before, they just shut down, then reset, and go on like nothing happened. biggrin.gif

And no, your PSU will not shut down until there is an electrical fault, short circuit or excessive amps drawn.

They could be arguing gunner2.gif AMD V's Intel as well gunner.gif

Haha cheers man +rep.

I believe it's a dodgy fan controller on the 600t now, would explain the flickering led lights and smoke and why the system kept running far cry 3 at the time lol. I

Just use a 200-300 ohm resistor. It's small enough to pull down inputs but large enough to prevent excessive current that can damage something.

pOWER jUST tHE odd. It may have overvoltage protection diodes, just as hard disks do, and one may have shorted. But it should also have fuses inline with those diodes, and one of them could have popped. Search for Franc Zabkar and TVS for a guide about that. OTOH some power chip (drives motor, moves heads, or powers laser) or a voltage regulator for it may have shorted, and that's much harder to fix.
