Corrosion?

Hey guys, so I'm fairly new to watercooling...

Had my loop which consists of an XSPC RayStorm (copper), 2x EK Titan XXLs (nickel plated copper), BP fittings (brass), and Koolance QD4s (brass?), PrimoChill Advanced LRT (pearl yellow) running for about 8 months with distilled water and a few drops of Dead Water.

I decided it was time to drain and re-fill it yesterday, and saw what looked like to be corrosion on one of the QD4s when dissembling so I decided to take everything apart and have a look. There was some hazing on everything so I decided to soak it all in ketchup for a few hours and then give it a scrubbing with a toothbrush (as advised on here) and they came out pretty much looking the same.

My question is, is this corrosion? And if it is, will these parts still be safe to use after cleaning? Any tips on preventing corrosion (should I use something premixed)? Or is this normal and I'm just overreacting?

Pics:

(the BP fittings look to be in pretty good shape so I didn't bother with pics)

Thanks, any input is much appreciated.

Looks like my blocks, 2 years still going strong. So i'll just say normal.

I don't think it will be an issue. Next time put in an corrosive inhibitor mixture and you shouldn't see this happen anymore.

Anything you recommend?

I use Mayhem's coolant which comes with a corrosive inhibitor already mixed in. You could try that or pretty much anything that says it will inhibit corrosion from a watercooling parts website should work fine.

If you really wanna go cheap, automotive coolant has corrosion inhibitors. if mixed with distilled water like you were initially using, adding it would certainly help with corrosion, a lot of people do not recommend doing this, but there are others who have done it for extended periods without issues.

Edit:
dont try to just run just the store bought 50/50 premixed stuff in your loop without diluting it further, it is a more viscous liquid than water and has the potential to overwork your pump. So perhaps a 1:3 ratio of 50/50 to distilled water.

But a coolant like Mayhems is a great idea, you could add color to your loop, and the look of their pastel white coolant looks pretty awesome.

Automotive coolant is really not good for the system as it contains other additives that can mess with your loop. You can buy a bottle of corrosion inhibitor off of frozencpu for like 8$ http://www.frozencpu.com/products/21400/ex-liq-95/Feser_Base_Corrosion_Blocker_-_50mL_-_FB-0055.html?tl=g30c103s186

Yeah hes right, its not really recommended, as there is other stuff thats in it and it would be working outside of its designed operating environment (not having to deal with extreme temps, various metals) but i suggested it as a quick and dirty fix if he was feeling adventurous. thumb.gif

Haha, alright, thanks a lot guys. I already ordered some of the Feser stuff last night so will give that a shot.

As for Mayhem, that doesn't gunk up your loop at all? Remember reading some pretty bad feedback in regards to it, so I avoided it.
