Like all purchases, be smart about them and never get suckered into without any credible evidence.

It's obvious they are doing this for money reasons and them wanting to get more money out of people who are impatient and believe everything they read.
haha yep. 2 games if we are lucky tongue.gif

agree - Microsoft are more and likely getting back handers of the card makers. Cant prove it though biggrin.gif

look at 11 then we had 11.1 . 11.2 and 12 coming as Mantle shook them up biggrin.gif

Wasn't 11.1 and 11.2 mostly aimed at power saving features and improving battery life? I don't think it had anything to do with Mantle.

As for DX12... it's debatable whether Mantle had an influence or not. I think it influenced them to get it out there quicker, but didn't really influence where they were headed in the first place.

I wouldn't be too sure on the Mantle part. Seems to me they were reluctant being the devs were asking around for a lower API. Seems MS may have gave a resounding no. Now that Mantle is out and any info on Linux involvement is still quite nill to very little, MS probably felt the need to get some PR out to quell Devs looking to Linux.

It's not just mantle, Valve pushing SteamOS played a part too.

True. That too. And lets not forget Android being the market shift to mobile. Just for the record I prefer windows: PC, Xbox and my phone, love the interconnectivity.

11.2's big feature was the improvements to tile resource utilization. Which looks like it should be a substantial performance boost if actually used by a game/graphics engine...at least on paper.

As for DX12 being effected by Mantle...the request for a lower level API supposedly came from various representatives of the developing community. They probably weren't just talking to AMD...I am sure they spoke with Microsoft and Nvidia too. AMD was just the first to get something out, and by only focusing on the GCN GPUs it was probably much easier to make something so they got it out faster.

It was said that Intel and Nvidia both declined and then AMD took the offer. Never saw MS mentioned early on.

Yeah I remember that too...I just always assumed that they spoke to MS too. I mean, how could any one be discussing APIs and not involve D3D?

I believe the report was that Intel and Nvidia flat out declined...so MS might of just said "we will look into it"...and AMD said, "Sounds like a great idea we will get working on it immediately"

How is this different than any other DX version?
And why is it bad - I don't get...more features/instructions, new ASIC for them (short of what a GPU is). For DX11 and back, what's done is done, is not taken away (as if DX11 was maximized).

In any way, I see it as a good thing for us - we will get DX12 GPUs, instead of a reheat and re-serve of the same designs over and over, where they just add more cores/SMX or w/e.

Let's make a deal Microsoft, I'll personally convince the world to upgrade from Windows XP if you can convince developers to upgrade from just using DX9. Deal? Deal.
