Upgrading old HP dekstop, need advice on where to start.

Thread Starter
Okay, so my brother is a broke college student in his senior year, and he majored in film. Because of this, he spends most of his time editing/rendering video. The problem is, his only computer is an old HP Pavilion a6600f, which does not perform too well.

He recently asked me to help him upgrade it a piece at a time as he earned money from an internship. I knew that his CPU was the component in most desperate need of an upgrade, but I ran into a problem. His computer is so old that his mobo only has a LGA 775 Chipset, which leaves almost no room for improvement. How to proceed is where I need advice.

I know that he needs to replace his motherboard, but if we do that, his current CPU will most likely not be compatible, right? Do we have any choice but to wait until he has enough money to purchase a new mobo and a new CPU at the same time? Are their any requirements for the new motherboard other than being microATX?

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Subbed, I want to see what the answers are to this as well.

but IMO, it seems like that PC is not worth upgrading. maybe get some more Ram? but then again, it is DDR2 ram though, so that might not be worth it also.

What do you want to do, just edit/encode a lot faster?

TBH there's not so much to do with it - more than likely you don't want the mobo, the psu, the RAM, there's no GPU, you might not even want the case - and if you wanted to upgrade CPU in the first place, there's not much to start with unless you are happy with old, low quality components

you can get a new (used cpu) looking at the motherboard specs
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01357119&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en#N55

This is an E8400, it is a wolfdale cpu and is on the supported list
http://www.overclock.net/t/1458406/e8400-ocz-4gb-reaper-pc2-8500-abit-ip35-pro-motherboard-mushkin-2gb-blackline-pc2-6400

$25 shipped.

the board only does single channel ram, but whatever just get the 2 highest capacity sticks you can get! just go on craiglsist and look for some DDR2 ram, i found 8gb of gskill sticks of my old rig for $40 where i live. the highest frequency ram it supports is 800mhz, just keep that in mind
http://www.overclock.net/t/1476136/g-skill-and-ocz-ddr2-ram heres ram for $50

and last i would probably suggest a video card as well, since the onboard is crap. if you want toi go new i would suggest a 750ti because it will not require a new power supply (at least i hope it wont) haha since the 750ti does not require a 6pin connector, and is very power efficient.

good luck upgrading that old rig!

head on over to the marketpalce here and have a look at what theyre selling, theres some pretty good deals there!

i would say that it is kind of a waste dumping money in this rig, but if hes broke, then hey what the heck.

maybe buying someones old rig would be a good idea as well...

Do a search on that board, I'm pretty sure it can run Core2Quads. If that's the case, grab a used Q6600.

Official support. I've had a few older HP boards (939 board) that claimed to only support single core variants of the Athlon 64 series. However, I was able to run a 4200+ and 4800+ without any problems.

I'll look around and see If I can find anyone who has ran a C2Q or any evidence of it being possible.

Here we go:

Look at the specs of this prebuilt HERE

Same board, but supports the Core2Quad series. thumb.gif
