yeah you can score a q6600 for about $50 on ebay. that would be a decent upgrade right there.

I dunno... My mother had an old DC7800 and I couldn't upgrade the CPU at all. As soon as I swapped chips, the BIOS did a hard stop stating that it would refuse to boot.

Thanks for the great response everyone. First off, he actually upgraded the ram to 4GB about a year ago, so that's sufficient for know I think. The thing is, he's planning on building a new desktop when he actually has some money (probably next year), but for now he needs to make his current PC usable for that internship I mentioned.

This is an E8400, it is a wolfdale cpu and is on the supported list
http://www.overclock.net/t/1458406/e8400-ocz-4gb-reaper-pc2-8500-abit-ip35-pro-motherboard-mushkin-2gb-blackline-pc2-6400

$25 shipped.

and last i would probably suggest a video card as well, since the onboard is crap. if you want toi go new i would suggest a 750ti because it will not require a new power supply (at least i hope it wont) haha since the 750ti does not require a 6pin connector, and is very power efficient.

That CPU seems like a very viable choice. The thing about upgrading the GPU is that I'm not sure it's necessary, since he doesn't play games or anything

Yeah, he can't afford much more than upgrading a couple of components at the moment.

Yeah, and actually be able to multitask. He says if he opens anything else while Avid Media Composer is open, everything will crash.

pull the battery on the mobo before doing a cpu swap.. let sit for 30 min

will need to go into bios and reset clock and anything else u have previously changed. I have found this to be of great help on upgrading 775 systems... even the old 478..

I have a old p4 3.0ghz 800mhz fsb with 4gb ddr2 and a NVidia 8400gt pci-e on a biostar mobo I got new last year to build a throwback.. and put the spare parts to use.. runs windows 7 ult 32bit like a champ for my car pc..(not gonna be doing any rendering tho lol)

That's a bit... well quite a long ways out of his budget haha.

so the dual for $25 or picking up a quad for $50
