Perfect candidate for this

http://www.overclock.net/t/1431723/mod-lga775-support-for-lga771-xeon-cpus

You can find quad core (2.5GHZ e5420) 771's for ~$25 and 3ghz e5450 for ~$45

4gb of cheap ddr2

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corsair-4GB-2-X-2GB-240-Pin-PC2-6400-DDR2-800MHz-RAM-Memory-VS2GB800D2/151258405617?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222003%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D5721827786198139129%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D20131003132420%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D251199517008&rt=nc

grab a 6450 for $10 AMIR to handle graphics and he will have a perfectly acceptable rig for his needs

i have a DC7900 that ran with a q6600 no problem, so the cpu should work, i think haha

Oh, the q6600 is much more manageable. Sorry, I was looking at the prices for the CPU listed in the linked thread, the Q9650. I think that would definitely be a great start. So, that should probably be the first thing we go for right? Even that much should hold him for awhile, and eventually we'll probably upgrade the PSU and GPU and leave it until he gets a new PC.

That specific mobo was on the latest BIOS. Don't let things like that slip under the radar. wink.gif

I have a old p4 3.0ghz 800mhz fsb with 4gb ddr2 and a NVidia 8400gt pci-e on a biostar mobo I got new last year to build a throwback.. and put the spare parts to use.. runs windows 7 ult 32bit like a champ for my car pc..(not gonna be doing any rendering tho lol)

Never had to pull the battery, just a CMOS reset. But, handy info, nonetheless.

So, what do you all think would be better? The dual at 3.0Ghz or the quad at 2.4Ghz ? I think he's more concerned with the speed of his rendering than the ability to multitask, so I'm leaning a bit towards the duo as I'm not sure how well Avid Media Composer utilizes hyper threading, but I'm not settled on either yet.
Core2Duo's are not hyperthreaded. Go for the quad.

if he doesnt play games then maybe dont spend too much on a gpu, just try too update the bios first, and if the q6600 doesnt work then put it right back on ebay, it will sell no problem.

and as far as the gpu is concerned it will help with playback, and should work with cuda acceleration with the 750ti (dont quote me on this, im not the expert) but thats the benefit of using a discrete card.. or you can try to find a used Nvidia GTX card for cheaper since you did want to upgrade the power supply

Go to the forum that is relevant. Like Nvida graphics cards, then it should say "start new thread"

Haha now go over to the help forum and post there smile.gif

Thread jacking is against the rules here! Sorry don't mean to seem like a prick.
