Best program to de-metro Windows 8? - Page 2

I used to use Start 8, until they screwed me over on my paid edition. My motherboard was toast and so i re installed their program on my new machine, and i re-installed a few times before i knew my board was gone, and my paid copy was at its install limit, and their customer service was rude, and refused to help me what so ever.

Now i use Start is Back.

Thread Starter
Thanks for all the input guys. I'm going to try ClassicShell (nothing to lose) and StartIsBack for the moment, I may try the other suggestions later down the line. smile.gif

You might want to upgrade to 8.1 or in the first place install it instead of 8.

ClassicShell is free and seems to work well. This one will take care of the Start screen. You can also use it to disable the "hot corners" of Windows 8. It will be very similar to 7 afterwards.

Regarding Metro apps that start when you open a PDF file or video or whatever, Windows 8 shows a program selection menu in the top right of the screen if it's the first time you opened that file type. Select a desktop program in that list or remember to install a normal Windows program to take care of this particular file type.

To quit a Metro app and get back to the desktop, move the mouse pointer to the top edge of the screen and start dragging downwards towards the bottom of the screen.

"Windows 8.1 Update 1" will come out in April. This one will take care of some more annoyances. It will for example have a title bar for Metro apps with a close button. It will also configure Windows to use less Metro apps and more desktop programs for various file types like pictures (I might be wrong). It will configure the desktop to show up by default after login, I think. The final version of it already leaked and you'll find it if you look around on BitTorrent sites or something.

If you really want to de-metro it, you may also want to look at this thread:

I'll probably have to switch over to Windows 8/9 eventually but they're is no way in heck I'm staring at those ugly flat elements. That is where this trick comes in.
