Budget laptop for college...

Thread Starter
What is your maximum budget?
Unlimited, but I'd like to go for an affordable budget laptop.

What country are you in?
Saudi Arabia

What will be the uses of this laptop?
I'm a college student. I would like a laptop I can carry around campus with me, take notes in lecture halls, surf the web and do a bit of light gaming during my free time.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Any

What screen size do you require?
Any. The standard 15.6" is fine, though I wouldn't mind a smaller size to make it easier to lug around campus. If its not much more expensive for a smaller size, I'd go for it.

What screen resolution do you require?
Any

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Any

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Any

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
I would like to play Valve's Source games fluently, including Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike Global Offensive and Black Mesa. MMO's such as Star Wars The Old Republic and The Lord of the Rings Online. Minecraft would be nice too.

I would like to maintain at least 30 FPS, and cap it there. I much prefer disabling all "fancy" effects / particles and what not, and instead run nice bare but clean graphics at a screen's native resolution, with MSAA x4 and AF x16... FXAA instead of MSAA is perfectly fine as well. I expect this shouldn't be difficult at all, as the Source engine and the mentioned games are fairly light?

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Any

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Any

How much hard drive space do you need?
Any

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Any

Is there anything else we need to know?
I will be purchasing the laptop from any online retailers that ship to Saudi. I've had good experience with Ebay and Amazon.

This laptop is not going to be my primary computer. I already have my own gaming setup (see signature). I need a laptop to use around college, and I would like it to have a bit more oomph over just note-taking and web-surfing. I want the laptop to be "maintenance"-friendly, rear plate opens and all components are easily accessible. If running an APU, must have 2 DIMM slots for dual channel memory for better performance later down the road.

Unlocked BIOS. I want to turn all the dials and knobs at free will, including the ability to increase / decrease clocks speeds and voltages, FSB, memory, the whole lot I am a tinkerer, I like experimenting. Check my signature, you'll understand... after all, this is Overclock.net!

Additional: I am considering a laptop based around a 4 core / 2 module AMD Trinity / Richland APU, such as the A8-4500m. Is the performance on 2 core / single module variants fine for my listed needs (A6 / A4 / E and C series), or should I avoid these? Are the 2 core / single module variants fine for such tasks?

I've been doing quite a lot of researching, ran across this laptop here... would you recommend I grab this?

Do you mind if you can link to an Amazon Saudi? I mean, I don't know if the amazon.com would work with Saudi or I am wrong.

I was thinking Lenovo Y410p or Y510p is a good laptop for you.
Both of those two packed a serious power for games that you listed.

Nah, no such thing around here. I simply log into Ebay, set my location as Saudi Arabia and see what's available for shipping to this region. Half my signature rig is from Ebay.com and Amazon.com.

Lenovo Y410p / Y510p look great for sure, but quite pricey. I'm specifically looking at "budget" laptops, hence something based on the AMD Trinity / Richland integrated graphics.

Getting warmer yep, still a bit too pricey though. $590 + $90 shipping. If memory serves me right, the difference between the A10 and A8 are only 5 FPS or so? I found this Gateway here, its got quite a lot of watchers too. I would grab it, but I have no idea if Gateway laptops are any good or not... I know they're rebranded Acers, still not sure... just need a few here to confirm they're fine and I'll grab it.

$370 + $70 shipping

Alternatively, this here is quite a steal, $290 + $25 shipping. If the A6-4400M dual core / single module is enough to run the mentioned games... well this is great!

Well, I still don't trust Gateway's brand.
Sure, there are few people who have "good" experience with them, but from what I research long time ago.
Gateway use used parts from all of the companies and slap them into the laptop and sell it to the consumer.

Not sure if they still do it not, but if they are. Well, is it worth buying a laptop with used parts inside?

As for A8 and A10, sure, it isn't a big difference of the FPS, but they are certainly faster than A8, however, you forgot that you are comparing two different APU gens.
The A10 for Lenovo is the AMD A10-5750m while the Gateway laptop has AMD A8-4500m.

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-A8-4500M-vs-AMD-A10-5750M

Here is the benchmark, and there are no advantages to grab AMD A8-4500m laptop.

Okay, if that Lenovo laptop doesn't work. How about this cheaper one?

100 dollar difference which I believe it is worth it.

Here is the APU benchmark between those two.

Best stay away from Gateway then. The Lenovo G505s line-up seems neat, so I'll have a look through those.

That one you listed looks great! But dang, no shipping to Saudi Arabia... I'm not in any hurry though, so I'll let this thread grow a bit. Getting really late here, I better head off to bed for now, I'll check up again as soon as I wake up.

So just we have a baseline to work with here... I've been all over Ebay now, and this seems like the best deal available. Provided the laptop runs fine for everyday use, and it can run the mentioned games fine, I'm grabbing it. I won't run any of the mentioned games maxed out, I have my PC for that. In fact, my preference is to turn everything down, and simply run the games at the laptop's native 1366x768 resolution, use FXAA and AF x16, limit FPS to 30.

Hmm, AMD A6-4400m with ATI Radeon HD 7520g.
It isn't a bad laptop just that I feel like you'll get handicapped by its so-so APU performance.

Does this laptop work?
