AMD 7950 GPU Usage Question

So I was playing Battlefield 3 today and I had the MSI on screen software on in which you can see your GPU temperature and GPU usage. I was only playing on medium settings @ 1080p and my GPU usage was only at 40% and never went passed 45% GPU usage. My question is why? Why won't it use 90% GPU usage and in return give me considerably better FPS and will allow to up the in game settings to high or ultra. I have a 25% overclock on the GPU if that matters. Is my card defective or am I missing something here? I am running the latest drivers. confusedsmiley.png

You most likely have a bottleneck in another component, might be your processor. Do you mind filling out your system specs in your Overclock.net profile or just posting them here?

Welcome to OCN by the way!thumb.gif

I5-2500k @ stock.
MSI P67 GD65 ( latest BIOS and drivers ).
Hyper 212 CPU cooler.
Powercolor AMD 7950 ( 25% OC and latest drivers ).
Corsair TX 650w PSU.
1TB WD Black hard drive.

It's weird because sometimes when I am just web-browsing the GPU usage will bump up to 99% but when I actually play a game that puts a load on it, it uses less than half of my GPU.

You should be fine. I know that many websites coded in HTML5 utilize hardware acceleration, which is why you get some GPU usage during browsing.

Do you have a frame limiter enabled in BF3 (VSync)? Also make sure Catalyst has vsync set to either disabled or application managed.

Vsync is disabled in game and is disabled unless application is specified in CCC. Could it just be that my GPU is defective ( at least in that way ) and I should RMA it? I don't want to do this as I don't have a spare GPU lying around. I'm just stuck at what to do.

I have set my GPU back to default settings and still the same result.

If you turn up/down settings in BF3 does the card stay at 45% or so usage? Does it fluctuate?

Even stock should be able to push a 7950 higher than 45%, hell, it should be able to push xfire 99%

nope. i've had those. 2 7950s and a 7970. i still have a SB. a 7950 is about equal to 2 6950s. cpu needs to be oc'ed. only game i can keep my i7 at stock and HT off (basically an i5) is BF4 with mantle. BF3 MP 64, i have to oc my i7 to 4.5 and turn HT on.

edit: op, use 13.12 or 13.11 drivers. bar any driver issue, you should be able to max out BF3 - i mean max with a bit of an oc on the cpu even with the 7950 at stock 1000 on the core will help.

Instead of going from 45% GPU usage on medium it maxes out at 50% GPU usage on high and ultra settings. Still broken.

MP. I'll try for an OC and hopefully I'll hit 4.5ghz ( shouldn't be too hard on SB ).

Right! At least I'd think that but I am out of options so I might as well OC my CPU and see if that changes anything.
