Best software for swapping keyboard keys? (preferably non-registry-editing)

I'd like to swap keys - for example when I press Q i'd like it to be registered by the PC as another key (let's say E). I want software I can remove whenever I want and be able to remove/uninstall it completely without any leftovers or problems (probably it's a good idea to be portable). If it doesn't edit registry values it's a plus. But if you think it's a good one and it does - then it's okay smile.gif

I use KeyTweak, and have for many years. It writes to the registry but is more effective than say Autohotkey - another good alternative that instead runs in the background but as such sometimes doesn't work as well in some apps (games, mainly).

If you'd like a simple, portable remapping app that does far more than remapping Autohotkey is the way to go. It's solid and supports 90% of the remapping anyone would want. For keys you'd like hard-remapped into a different key I use KeyTweak, but for most use it's probably unnecessary.

I intend to use it only for gaming, so is this going to be a real problem for Autohotkey?

If you only want the keyboard remapped during games Autohotkey is the best option. As I said the majority of the time it will work pefectly, although you may need to set a different 'SendType' in the script. See this post for deets.

Autohotkey scripts are pretty simple. For regular remapping a .ahk script would look like this inside:
Code:
q::e

Those two colons between the characters tell Autohotkey to remap q -> e. The link above also includes SendMode Play which when added above the remappings targets games more effectively.

Try Autohotkey out and see if it works with your game. If you run into problems with a particular game there will typically be threads on Google about it, and of course you could ask on the AHK forums, too smile.gif
