Best air cooled rival for the H80i?

Hi all

Im currently in the process of choosing components and ive got a total with the chosen components but id like to lower the cost a little by maybe switching out the Corsair H80i for an air cooled option is there any good rivals for this?

This is the core set up which could affect cooler options or not...

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C10 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit

Many thanks

I always hear people saying good things about the noctua nh-d14, but it's pretty much in the same price range as the H80i

My $30 Hyper 212+ EVO had my 3570K at 4.5 and my 3770k

Granted my H90 runs cooler but the EVO did very well

Im just not sure weather its worth the price but if an air cooler would be nearly the same price i couldnt jusify not going for the H80i if its not much diff but if i can get similar performance with an air cooler and save $$$ then ill go for it ive been out of the PC scene for a while and its nuts how much tech has advanced i feel like a noob again lol

If you want to "OC the poop" out of the CPU, then even the H80i is a bit limited

It does pretty well, but if you really want to push the CPU then you probably would want to be looking at something at least along the lines of a H100i

but, depends how far you want to go with OC'ing

Antec 920(1c)>Nh d14=h80i(1c)>nh u14s

That 1c can mean a tie.

This, and they will be quieter too.

Keep in mind your case needs to flow more air than components do. It isn't so much how many fans but how well they flow air through the case. If components move more air than case things heat up. I generally suggest 30-50% more case cfm than component cfm but well tuned airflow can be almost equal equal.
For example
  • My sig system has 3x TY-140 74cfm intake fans. (no exhaust fans), CPU has TY-143 130cfm fan and GPU has 2 TY-100 44cfm fans
  • Case = 222cfm
  • Components = 218cfm
  • Air temp inside of case is never more than 3c above room.
  • 2 front TY-140 & CPU cooler TY-143 fans are PWM controlled by CPU
  • Bottom TY-140 & GPU TY-100 fans are PWM controlled by GPU
