Minecraft hdd - Page 3

i7 without specific model says nothing.

your athlon is bad... minecraft use 1 core your dual is worst in singlethread than the sempron

The sempron 145 unlocked = Athlon x2 220 that is about a intel core 2 e8400 at 2.5ghz

now im probably getting a x2 250 if the guy respond to my email... for 40$ biggrin.gif

Gpu wise your right intel hd are better but i have bad experience with their gpu driver of older model...

But thank you smile.gif

Well i7 means good generally. Anybody familiar with CPUs should know that. They're not exactly old enough like Pentiums that have been out for such a long time that the name is meaningless. Yes the performance from first gens are bad compared to current, but even first gens are still decent.

The one I used was the 2600K, the one in my sig rig.

If you get the 250, go for it. That should work fine enough.
That's at the performance point where I'd probably use it, but I still recommend pre generating the map.
I'd recommend doing so even with my i7, since pre generating the map just makes everything perform better. The only downside to it is it makes the world folder larger, so backups will be larger. This isn't really a bad thing though, just something worth mentioning.

If you want to pre generate your map, you can do it with the WorldBorder plugin. This puts an impassable invisible wall at the setting, but I'm sure you can generate the map with it and remove the border if you do not like that feature.
http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/worldborder/

Minecraft also isn't restricted to one core, neither the client or the server.
Both will have certain things that are single-threaded and intense, like mob AI but generally multiple cores help up to a certain point. Multiple cores are not so helpful to the client, but servers can benefit pretty nicely from them. I wouldn't go so far as to say the Sempron is better than the Athlon, but in some situations it definitely has the potential to be.

Good luck with everything.

To be honest I think that on the Minecraft side you are overestimating the CPU requirements. With only 20 people as a max you could do that on pretty much anything Intel Atom or above.

Disk speed is almost a non issue with any of the cpus that are being mentioned here. if it does ever become an issue your best redress is to actually reduce the things causing a need to save rather than increasing the speed; ie. if people generating new chunks is causing lag then use something like world border to generate the whole world during off hours. On a dell pe1950 I was able to run world border fill to 10,000 in all directions and that required all 8 cores @ 100% for over 24 hours, that was with old 73GB sas disks. All that world with a dynmap that I rendered for a few days after that took about 30GB of disk.

As far as internet goes 2Mbps up should be good for that many users, but thats to say that we take in to account only the speed that sales gave you. During peak hours even if speed test gives 2Mbps for upload you may experience issues with it because it appears to be just normal tcp to QoS and so you can very well have a problem with lag even when you test and it seems fast enough. Latency is another issue. I would fret to use cable modem for anything above friends, but I may just be spoiled with fiber.

I am not sure how folding would react with an mc server, I would imagine that it would react unkindly. So I would recommend that you at very least change its niceness on a linux system of change it priority on a windows system, and set its affinity to anything but whichever core you set as the mc cpu.

On anything server it needs loads of ram. If you plan on running ftb of any kind you should have at very least 5GB for just it. i have needed 10GB for ftb ultimate and 6 players before.

Have you thought about just getting a previous generation server? Something like the c1100 that would give dual quad cores with h/t on them? They run on a slower clock, but the volume of cores and huge cache they run makes up for it.

You'll probably have to use Windows 8 Professional for two physical CPUs.

Centos http://wiki.centos.org/About/Product should be easily capable of doing that. Install webmin and you should be good to go.
