Do you like stereo or surround speakers/headsets?

I personally like surround headsets because even though it is not true surround, it sounds more realistic. For example if someone is on your left talking, it comes through both earphones as if there is really someone on your left. It is more pronounced in the left earphone, but you can also hear them in the right earphone a bit. With stereo headphones you only get the audio in the left earphone. I don't know what 3D sound officially means, but I get a sense of 3D in games with the sound. If someone is 5 feet away it actually sounds closer than if they were 15 feet away. It isn't just louder either. It is like you can hear more in their voice. Their consonants are more pronounced when they are close. It is a bit hard to explain how it is different without being just louder. When I do the Windows sound test in "Playback devices" it sounds a bit like surround, but the sounds in front and in back are kind of the same. But in a game if I hear a sound right in front of me and there is nobody there, I know it's in back.

Right now I am playing a heavily modded Skyrim with CoT sounds, super storms, and extra birds, bugs, and other animals that make sounds. (if you play modded you will know all about this). It is so much better playing with surround cans than using my stereo speakers. I have a cheapo set of speakers for when I am not immersing myself in an ultra cinematic experience.

So yeah I figured I would get a discussion going about what people like to use for gaming

I feel quite the opposite. Have you ever tried a good stereo headset vs your 5.1? A stereo headset SHOULD give you the surround feel, and surround headsets are just gimmick. Sorry, but you wasted your money.

When it comes to real surround speakers, that's a entirely different situation, and it gives a lot of immersion to the game/movie.

The biggest problem is that the quality of the drivers is very low. You can get a similar effect with simulated surround, combined with the clarity of audiophile headphones.

I wasted my money? I bought a $100 headset and I enjoy it fully in my games. I don't know what you consider "wasting" money, but I can assure you that I did not. And that was kind of rude tbh.

I'm not an audiophile and I am not going to pay $200 for a set either. I am confident that I spent my money wisely and I did not ask you 2 if you guys thought it was a good decision for me. I asked what kind of sound you like and why. Not what kind of sound I SHOULD like.

It was not my intention to be rude, sorry for that. I have just seen to many people buy surround headset without really knowing what they are getting. It is a marketing trick to fool people that are not audiophiles and it works damned well sadly. I have tried most of the typical surround headsets out there, and they have been overpriced for what you get every time. A good stereo headset can be had for the price you paid.

When it comes to what I use for gaming, I typically use my surround speakers. Feel more comfortable using speakers over headsets and love to get some bass other than straight in to the ears.
Really cool to use in battlefield where you can hear for example a rpg pass you, gets me every time and I jump lightly in the chair smile.gif

ive owned all kinda of headsets. 5.1 and 7.1 configs with all the speakers shoved into the cups as well as the Pysko audio headset (AMAZING FOR GAMES, Crap everything else) to high end stereos and for me i love my stereo headset with Dolby dig simulated surround sound.

In my opinions

5.1/7.1 headsets with multiply drivers in each ear (tritton and turtle) = Crap

5.1 Psyko headset with all the drivers on top of your head.... (Psyko Audio) = BEST SURROUND EVER.... well for true 5.1 games and movies anything else honestly sounded like junk to me

Stereo Headset (any 2 channel headset) = Great middle ground to start with, can get a good set that wont brake the bank but still makes it better then some junk speakers or no sound.

Stereo Headset with Dolby digital simulated surround sound Logitech (G35) = Best of both world for me. Stereo for music and everyday stuff but when i wanna game it up with best positional audio in a First person shooter game then i flip a button and BAM, 7.1 surround sound.

As someone who has a 7.1 Speaker setup i can say that my G35's do put out positional audio super well. sure wont get the DEEP THUMPS of bass when rockets explode or get that thump in my chest when i fire a sniper off like my speakers do but my Headset is sweet when i wanna know were people are coming from and dont want to wake the GF.

Just my 2cents.gif though tongue.gif

sennheiser makes some over the ears in the 80-100 that have really good sound staging for the price range.
and are neutral if that matters to you.
