In my opinions

5.1/7.1 headsets with multiply drivers in each ear (tritton and turtle) = Crap

5.1 Psyko headset with all the drivers on top of your head.... (Psyko Audio) = BEST SURROUND EVER.... well for true 5.1 games and movies anything else honestly sounded like junk to me

Stereo Headset (any 2 channel headset) = Great middle ground to start with, can get a good set that wont brake the bank but still makes it better then some junk speakers or no sound.

Stereo Headset with Dolby digital simulated surround sound Logitech (G35) = Best of both world for me. Stereo for music and everyday stuff but when i wanna game it up with best positional audio in a First person shooter game then i flip a button and BAM, 7.1 surround sound.

As someone who has a 7.1 Speaker setup i can say that my G35's do put out positional audio super well. sure wont get the DEEP THUMPS of bass when rockets explode or get that thump in my chest when i fire a sniper off like my speakers do but my Headset is sweet when i wanna know were people are coming from and dont want to wake the GF.

Just my 2cents.gif though tongue.gif
+1 on Dolby
I am using Sound Blaster Z + turtle beach DDS(Dolby processor) + creative aurvana live(Cheap but good headphone) it works great. better than just plug my headphone into SBZ

Just dont get "Gaming surround headphone"

ATH-700, DT770 SR80i.. i heard ppl suggesed those headphone for gaming

Sorry for my Enlgish :S

Razer Surround pretty much makes surround sound headphones redundant for multimedia (including gaming) use.

Money non issue:

Properly setup surround sound speakers are always best.

Also imaging is much more important than surround.

Personally use Toneboosters Isone for proper nearfield speaker 2.1 emulation for headphones for music
and Razer Surround for multimedia use.

Just my 2cents.gif though tongue.gif

I initially debated chiming in on this thread but after seeing someone else with good knowledge and useful information offered, and not just pissing gas of opinions in to the fire i think ill say my 2 cents worth

first off id love to try those Psyko headphones those look interesting. Now I am neither a full on audiophile or uneducated as to what true audiophile grade equipment sounds like.

but IN MY OPINION, I do find surround sound headphones to be mildly gimmicky, but i feel they also have their place and ill go on to explain my opinion below

I personally own a pair of Razer TI mat 7.1 pro's (no didn't pay 200 dollars for them) i picked them up second hand in mint condition for 35 bucks when i was looking for a headset for gaming on my desktop late at night so that I would not wake my family up when at home or wake up my roomm8 when in our dorm room. And for the money I spent on them I don't think that I could have gotten a better headset for what I wanted them to do. My setup with them currently is running them with onboard sound (can't say I recommend that they need a good bit of power, never seem to be able to get them loud enough for me). Now I will say this in my opinion THEY ARE NOT worth the 200 dollar asking price. The surround sound on them is good and its fun to play games with them cranked up, the immersion and directional audio in BF3 is great and the sniper rifles and full auto rifles is great fun, explosions from in front of me is killer... They are pretty good with movies that are natively coded in 5.1-7.1. But for music and anything coded in stereo I can not say that I would recommend these or any surround headset, As I after having these for about 6 months its not worth the premium over a good quality stereo headset.

now as for immersion aspect from the OP yeah surround headset are fun in games. but highend stereo headsets can do the same thing..

but for me I for gaming i enjoy my ti mat 7.1

music and movies my logitech z2300 or my pioneer 5.1 system. or my competition audio sound car for music =) 140 db @ the drivers headrest =)

because IN MY OPINION no headset can produce the same effect of a dedicated sub.
