It's two GPUs, two IMCs, and two sets of DRAM.

It's two GPUs.

No, the hunk of silicon is important for memory access. It's faster to access memory on a local memory controller (<30ns) versus one on a different memory controller on a different chip (80-500ns).

At 4k with, 8 Msaa, Max payne reported over 12gb of vram used and I think it was around 6-ish for 4msaa, assuming max payne is any kind of accurate....

I was still able to run msaa at 4k on my Ti's, can't remember exactly how much as I returned the monitor

I personally think the Titan Z is gonna run out of steam before it ever gets to use the 6gb, but who knows, VRAM usage is such a vague subject

and msaa does have an effect at 4k IMO, if you COULD turn it on you probably would....

4k is pretty rough when you turn aa on it can really hamp your fps

i tried with 1680 res on my max monitor for battlefield 4, everything on ultra settings, i can play 60-40fps at 200 percent resolution scale, thats like 3360 or so res

i think thats right? 1680 times 2?
then i turned on aa or hbao and boom

fps averaged 30, ouch.
and my card is rated for 4096x2160 res
http://www.powercolor.com/Global/products_features.asp?id=523#Specification
yet it cant play bf4 at max on 3k with aa on. with or without aa, i barely notice a difference, i have to crouch and look at the grass to notice the difference and its just ever so slightly, slightly slightness of smoothyness, barely anything, just a little spec on the table hah

also even when i played at 200 percent res scale which scales the image down at higher resolutions, without aa on, even with the nice 60-40 fps, it dips a bit too often for my liking and the gpu fan cranks up so loud its just not worth the eye candy.

how are graphics card going to handle the higher resolutions, more vram? so would a 6gig gpu make the fan still crank up as much as a card with less vram?

if thats the case then the future of gpus on air is going to be very loud.

How did you come up with this number?
What monitoring tool you used?
Can you please provide a picture showing this.

NOTE:
I used to have 3x 7970 6GB cards.
using MSI AB it shows total usage of memory over the 3 cards.
Example if MSI AB reads 12GB this actually means total used VRAM per card is (12/3=4) 4GB mirrored over the 3 cards.
So can you redo the test and show us the result.....
Also please show average FPS to indicate if the game is actually playable at this settings or not.

That is simply not possible - there is no gaming GPU out there that has 12gb VRAM. Did you play MP3 w/ a Quadro K6000?

Also, my old thread "6GB VRAM Used" (search it) showed the max usage w/ 8x MSAA in Crysis 3 w/ everything maxed out used about (allocated actually) 6109MB of VRAM (just over 6GB.

I've yet to see another screenshot anywhere near 6GB being used.

That was with 3 30" monitors in Portrait mode @ 5160x2560 (13.2MP). 4K resolution is around 8MP so I highly doubt 6GB would be used.

Here's Crysis 3 @ 4K (2160P) although I was playing at 5160x2560:

I am really waiting for a GPU that has 12GB VRAM. I actually NEED that kind of VRAM because:

That's 4K Surround btw (3 4K monitors in Portrait mode @ 6480x3840 -- 25MP)! biggrin.gif

Woah there tanto!! Put the pitchforks down!....biggrin.gif

Max payne 3 gives an amount of vram its says will be used when you select 8x msaa

At 4k it gave me that 12gb number and please refer to my other comment, "if max payne is any kind of accurate"

I'm well aware gaming GPU's don't have 12gb of vram at this time, sir

Interesting....so your saying 6gb is good enough for 1 4k monitor, guess you would know, what with that trifecta of insanity you got there.....thumb.gif
