Background/Static Noise

Thread Starter
A few of my subscribers pointed out that my game recordings have some background noise. So I wanted to see what was causing this. I have a Plantronics Gamecon 780 headset that is plugged into the back usb port. I have all enhancements disabled and set the mic gain at around 25. I went into audicity and while sitting in a quiet room I record a few seconds. I can clearly hear the noise so I wanted to know if this was maybe a usb issue. I have a cheap headset but uses audio jacks for mic/headphone and plugged that into the front panel and did the same test. The noise is almost completely gone. I have checked everything and just rebuilt the whole rig. Checked the ground at the wall, tried different usb ports, etc.. I can only think that it is headset at this point. Is this a common thing with usb headsets? Any recommendations on a new headset but not to expensive.

Thanks

Have you tried reducing the microphone gain? It's a common problem with low end microphones. How about disabling any type of boosts? Do you stream live or record and upload for later? You can use Audacity to reduce the static if you don't livestream.

Ya, the gain is at 20 (have tried 0-100) and all enhancements/boosts are disabled. I upload to youtube and use Dxtory to record with. I have thought about using audicity but the noise removal option has a weird sound to it. You can tell that something was used to clean the sound up. I can always tell when people use it in there videos. I know you can adjust the settings but I would rather have a good headset and be worry free.

Why not just keep the headset and buy a better microphone? Microphone and headset combos don't really perform the best with the mic lagging behind in quality.

I have 3 monitors so the space is limited. I don't like having something in front of me like that when gaming. I like headsets with a mic for simplicity.

Then there's not much else you can really do but to live with the static. Or keep trying to find a way to get rid of it, people have a lot of different solutions to getting rid of static interference or at least lessening them.
