I'm looking in to cases now - probably the Cooler Master HAF X. I'd like something quieter, but I'm not finding anything with good reviews that's also mentions fan noise (and loos as cool as the HAF X)

I'll bump down the power supply to an 850W.

I think the Trident memory should work fine - I checked at Noctua's website and as long as I remove the flares on the top (which seem to just be for show) it should fit fine with my CPU cooler.

I also think I'm going to stick with the i7-4770K for now. I don't need to spend the extra $$, especially now that I'm buying a $200 case, and my video editing and transcoding isn't all that heavy. Nor are the VM's… I will see how things perform and if need be, I'll leave them running on other machines.

I appreciate all the advice. Thanks again!

I have the ""fractual design define XL R2""its a full tower case,,i give it a great review for being quiet,,dust free,,and great airflow,,,and plenty of room,,very happy with it

I paid 150$ Canadian for it

That's a very good price if the case comes out the same as the one in the video.

Thread Starter
A couple of nice cases there. I already ordered the HAF X though - so I'm going to go with that. I watched a few videos on it, and it seems quiet enough.

I am now reading about the Haswell Refresh being a different socket... ugh! Does that mean this i7-4770K will be the last best processor useable on my ASUS Maximus VI Formula? Is it worth waiting and holding out for the newer chip and Z97 board? I'm thinking not, as there will likely always be something right around the corner that I could potentially hold out for... and I want my machine now. But for overclocking it sure sounds like a nice move forward... doesn't look like the i7-4790K will be available until the September timeframe though...

All that got me thinking about what else is going to last in this machine. When I do an upgrade in a couple of years, I imagine my DDR3 will go by the wayside as well, eh? Hmm.

Honestly, its not worth waiting around IMO, unless its only like 3 weeks. The 4770K will hold you off very nicely for like 3 years (unless you get tech obsessed like me, then it will last like 6 months lol). Yes its going to be on a different board altogether, but I hear it will still be socket 1550. Maybe there will be bios updates, maybe not. Honestly, for the "gains" I really dont think its worth it. BTW, there is absolutely no reason to get a Maximus, unless your doing LN2 cooling. A board like the Asus Z87-Pro or the Gigabyte UD5H will be more then enough board for you.

Yes, when you do an upgrade in like 3-4 years, DDR3 will be starting its journey out and DDR4 will be worming its way in. you will get that awkward time period when DDR3 and DDR4 are out at the same time and both cost a fortune because manufacturers cant decide which to make. My advice, get an X87 board and either a 4930K or a 4820K, get a decent motherboard and get 16GB of 2133 or higher RAM. Why? Because A:X87 is a wonderful platform with upgrade paths. B:Because running 4x4GB sticks of ram will result in a lower CAS, lower voltage and only like an extra $3 in price. C: Because when games do start accepting DDR4, your going to need more and faster DDR3 to keep up.

*EDIT*
Don't take offence to this, but start looking at a bit newer of parts. The Noctua DH-14 hasn't been at the top for a quite a while now. Take a look at some Phanteks units. Also, case wise, that HAF-X is very old, still cools good, but it is quite old. I hope you didn't pay a penny over $160 for it because you can get better cases for that much. wink.gif
