Right now OR is the only viable and working system that can be bought and used in fairly accessible amounts. Sony has a handful of working prototypes working within a specific demo that could easily be optimized to force a "fluid" feel when in reality it likely does not. And Valve has invited only a few dozen individuals to try their headset months ago.
So in the end what other company has 2 billion to throw at VR tech? OR just received 400 million cash and could easily sell off Facebook common shares to cover anything. Add in that Mark Z will likely support this with his full might and I have no doubt we can achieve a great VR experience by the years end.
don't care. Won't buy it. I can already see how facebook will market this.
You can buy FaceRift for 350$, then pay 30$ a month to avoid advertisements! Oh and just imagine all the creepy datamining hard/software they will put into later models. Eye tracking, heart beat tracking, heart rate tracking, temp tracking, breath rate tracking.
i'll stick to my trackIR5 & Nvidia surround for now. Facebook will never get a penny of my money. I rather go without the tech then give them a penny.
(unlike most of the people complaining here & elsewhere, I do not have a facebook account, and have not had one in over 10 years)
