"Real" games and social media don't really have anything to do with each other.

I hate to say it, but this is just another kickstarter backed hoodwink.

Sony's product is currently being built for PS4, maybe they will move to be part of the PC market. Valve is also still toying with VR headset, (NOT castAR)

Sony has a working Prototype with no current plans to release a consumer level product. Valve canned a good chunk of their VR engineers a few months ago and since then have hardly posted anything related to their own headset.

Right now OR is the only viable and working system that can be bought and used in fairly accessible amounts. Sony has a handful of working prototypes working within a specific demo that could easily be optimized to force a "fluid" feel when in reality it likely does not. And Valve has invited only a few dozen individuals to try their headset months ago.

So in the end what other company has 2 billion to throw at VR tech? OR just received 400 million cash and could easily sell off Facebook common shares to cover anything. Add in that Mark Z will likely support this with his full might and I have no doubt we can achieve a great VR experience by the years end.

I'm an engineer. One who is currently working for a company that was bought out by a bigger company 2 years ago. I've been on the shop floor during mergers and know how it works. Despite some grumbling and a few negative changes in conditions, not a single person left or was kicked out. Our industry leading technology (no, I'm not being big headed, there was a reason we were bought out) has improved as a result of the extra technical, financial and commercial backing.

Mergers can work, it all depends on the companies and agreement between them. Even if they don't, there tends to be a honeymoon period where everything is golden. If this merger falls flat I'm hoping that the honeymoon lasts long enough to get CV1 out.
Or maybe, just maybe, they saw that an extra $2bn could really help out with R&D, marketing, production costs and so on and actually improve their product.

Well my background actually is in Finance, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist or engineer to see how this acquisition is bad for the originally intended consumer. When a company dumps 2 billion dollars into another company, they generally want DOMINANT CONTROL because they have to answer to their stockholders at the end of the day. Case in point, Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream. Those were some passionate hippies, who were against the man, yaddaaa, yaddda, yadda....their ice cream used to be AMAZING, but then they SOLD OUT to Unilever and now their product is crap.

My main fear is that Facebook will try to find a way to squash competition by copyrighting certain parts of the process/hardware, sounds outlandish, but stranger things have happened.

competition is always good, especially in emerging technologies. (looks to his closet, smiles @ his dusty Virtual Boy)

once again, it is not 2,000,000,000 in cash.

It is 400M cash, ~1.5B in stock options (~21M facebook shares) and a 300M bonus if certain goals are met.

don't care. Won't buy it. I can already see how facebook will market this.

You can buy FaceRift for 350$, then pay 30$ a month to avoid advertisements! Oh and just imagine all the creepy datamining hard/software they will put into later models. Eye tracking, heart beat tracking, heart rate tracking, temp tracking, breath rate tracking.

i'll stick to my trackIR5 & Nvidia surround for now. Facebook will never get a penny of my money. I rather go without the tech then give them a penny.

(unlike most of the people complaining here & elsewhere, I do not have a facebook account, and have not had one in over 10 years)

Disappointing. FB is trash.

Of all companies to buy them, Google would have been the best option. But FB? Oculus is dead.

Think everyone is freaking out over nothing. But that's what's awesome. People are allowed to have their own opinions. I'll enjoy my DK2 when it ships thumb.gif

Oculus isn't dead. This will no doubt increase the quality of the product over a shorter period of time. I just want nothing to do with a facebook owned product.

I'm sure they will release an amazing product free of advertisements, free of DRM, free of spyware, & to top it all off, probably make the CV1 1440P.

Still don't care. I'll stick to hacking in trackIR5 into every game I play. thumb.gif
