According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo

nothing will sink, people who think it will sink are clueless. Many of us are against it from a morality standpoint. I think my favorite part is many of the people bashing it, then run to their facebook accounts to bash it. lachen.gif

I see a few possibilities. A.) Facebook is a software medium, which means we could see them compete with Steam: This could be good, but we already have so many LEGIT discount key websites that it wouldn't really matter.

zucker has already made multiple statements about it possibly turning into an advertising medium to generate profits. (most peoples biggest fear)

yeah... that was in the story I linked above, but it is so riddled with holes that it is near impossible to take @ face value.

which do you trust more? Palmer, or an unverifiable, unknown, now allowed to speak, supposed partner???

I'm guessing it will fall somewhere in the middle between the cleanup Palmer is doing on Reddit, & what is being said by Zukker.

I wish people would stop saying Mark Z said X and Y. Yes, he mentioned ads. But he did not specify how. He also mentioned sports events, medical, and more. Yet we want to hone directly in on the word "ads" and ignore everything else said on all the press releases.

A commercial is a ad right? So if they create a sports viewing experience for the rift one would expect a commercial right? That "could" explain the term "ads" used in his press release.

Everyone is freaking out over a single word from a entire fairly sizable press release. It's both hilarious and pathetic watching people freak out over a very massive "unknown" factor. Dropping support, canceling pre-orders, boycotting a product. Over what? Speculation on what a single small bullet point? VR has a very large spectrum of content it can explore given time. Let's not freak out expecting our stand alone headset will suddenly require a Ethernet port, and access to Facebook just to play Elite Dangerous.

Am I the only one that sees what a BARGAIN Facebook snagged Oculus for? bigeyedsmiley.png

$2 billion is nothing to them. Seriously, they bought WhatsApp for $20 billion a little while ago.

They just got the deal of a lifetime.

I realize that the slippery slope argument is never that credible...

It bothers me because this was (is) a product that was being developed within the gaming community by a company focused on that niche... and now it is going to be monitored and controlled by a company that spans to the masses and cares not for our niche (for the most part).

I don't know... maybe it's just the tech-hipster in me that doesn't want the oculus to go "mainstream" lol. It just sucks when you aren't the only kid anymore, and you are no longer the focus of attention... redface.gif

i'm referring to ads from the acquisition meeting recording, but can you blame people? We live in a world surrounded by ads. They only time we don't see them is when we are sleeping, hell we probably even dream about advertisements we are so heavily exposed to them.

This communities main fear is a breakaway from the gaming focus and or destroying the gaming focus with pop ups, overlays, subscription fees & so forth. FB profits from software, it will only be a matter of time until we understand how they want to profit from this.

They just bought the future of entertainment for maybe 1% of their profits they will make on this tech over the next 10 years.
