[WSJ] Facebook to Acquire Oculus - Page 17

$2 billion is nothing to them. Seriously, they bought WhatsApp for $20 billion a little while ago.

They just got the deal of a lifetime.

Wrong!

(1) Oculus is not a mass market proven product
(2) Competition threats are strong, Sony, Google, Valve, etc
(3) Oculus just destroyed their goodwill & credibility with their core fanbase
(4) The casual market that Facebook wants to target will most likely not adopt a "complicated" product that covers the entire head, makes them motion sick, and makes their neck sore.

(5) Oculus is not "The Holodeck," and has not re-invented or defined anything. Oculus is a relatively crude product from a tech standpoint....seriously, there are special versions of contact lenses that have electronic circuity for projecting hud data against your retina and we are supposed to believe a SCUBA mask with two OLED displays is the bees knees, lmao! The Movie Lawnmower Man was more innovative!

(6) The 2 billion spent was more or less a heist against facebooks shareholders. An "Italian Job," or "Thomas Crown Affair," so to speak
(7) Gamers loose. Period. The final product will be a shadow of its former original intent.

I can relate to that. I know I'm part of the small group saying "hey, this could be good" But I'd be lying if I said I didn't think FB was a poor choice for a buyout partner. But I've seen what can be done, and I"m more than happy to ride this out. I'm optimistic they are looking well past us gamers, and instead at the future of VR. If I'm wrong..Yall can laugh at me next year thumb.gif

I really much rather have 3x 1440p 3D monitors + trackir5(already have) , but it seems like those are never going to come out.

Shadow of former self? I disagree, this can only mean good things as far as the hardware its self goes.

I would guess the 1080p kit could come out @ ~250$ now. Which means we could see a 1440P kit @ 350$, i know quite a few people who are waiting on 1440P kits, which will come to market much sooner now that they have high levels of financial backing.

facebook sucks. delete your facebook.

I fail to see your point. I don't see his actions as selfish, and I don't see money "unmasking" the occulus founder.

I personally thought this was good news, facebook seems like the new google imo.

infact if you read the reddit link earlier in this thread you can see the benefits of being partnered with facebook.

2) We can afford to hire everyone we need, the best people that fit into our culture of excellence in all aspects.
3) We can make huge investments in content. More news soon.

just because you don't like facebook doesn't mean facebook is a bad company lol.

Can I ask what product Valve, google and sony have? Sony has a half dozen prototypes and have said in recent press releases they have no plans to produce a consumer product at this time. Valve has not mentioned or shown their VR tech since around January and that was to a select few, and lastly Google? I've seen next to nothing in terms of VR from google unless we are talking glass.

So what "threats"? What company is ready right now to go toe to toe? The answer is no one. Everyone has a Prototype nothing more.

First, the oculus is a SCUBA mask with two OLED panels in it. This is NOT high tech stuff, infact for its time Virtual Boy was more cutting edge!

Second, while Sony does have the HMZ product (which sucks due to uncomfortablility and poor resolution) the threats have not come out to prey yet because the market is so niche. The mass market public REJECTED 3D TVs because THEY DID NOT LIKE WEARING 3D GLASSES, now your telling me they are gonna welcome a gigantic headset with open arms LMAO! The market is just not there.

IF the rift was Holodeck or specialized contact lenses I might see your argument. But its not and never will be. This buyout just KILLED it.

Wow, this is horrible news.....!

Oculus could really have been the next amazing thing, but now I highly doubt it. Big loss!
