[WSJ] Facebook to Acquire Oculus - Page 26

I posted this in the SC forums and I think it needs to be here as well.

First, a lot of you guys and gals keep talking about 2 billion dollars going into the company. UNTRUE. 2 billion dollars goes into the pockets of the founders of OR. THEY SOLD the rights. They did not take a CASH INFUSION. 400 million in cash plus some stock options worth about 1.6 billion. One reason Facebook stock took a dive yesterday and today is probably you know the team was dumping that trash stock as soon as they could.

Bottom line, even after Palmer Luckey said less than 2 weeks ago "We won't sell out" he turned around and did. Zuckerberg called his bluff and said "I'm going to write down a number" and the number was high enough for Luckey to sell. Every man has a price. Luckey's was 400 million +. I hope it was worth it because if Facebook does to OR what they've done to every other IP they've bought you can pretty much kiss any version of VR we were hoping for goodbuy.

Not sure if want.

Ehhhhhhhhhh.

I'm a huge proponent of facebook but I can see this turning into Google Glasses if we're not careful. I don't want an ad in my face 24/7 when I'm using virtual reality :[

People are taking this just a bit too far.

The more I think about it, the more I See this splitting into a line of products, not just a singular OR.

The question being... How do they make this appeal to the masses? Simple, you make multiple products. You make one unit the is as it is now, it hooks up to & harnesses the power of your PC. The second product would have an integrated snapdragon/Tegra GPU, thus allowing it to be marketed towards the mobile crowd. I don't see it being that far fetched. They could easily setup an "Nvidia GRID" type system for the mobile division of the product. Last & least you have the discount model with the highest amount of advertisements. Kinda like the cheap tablets you can buy now.

You may or may not know this, but I spend quite a bit of time in the Star Citizen Chatroll. We have had multiple visits from high ranking staff to let us know that the SC/OR implementation is not affected by this merger. They are all quite shocked, but believe that it will lead to a quality product much sooner than before.

The other topic: Advertisements. The worst case scenario is that you buy your way out of integration. I don't actually see it going that far though. Any integration will likely have an off switch. (or you know, not have a facebook account)

Why facebook? They need a physical product to sell.

People who assume this will stifle innovation have assumed wrong. This will not doubt accelerate the R&D cycle. As everyone has said, they no longer have to buy cellphone industry scraps. They can now place orders for custom solutions, which will in turn increase the quality of the product.

either way, DK2 isn't going to change.

I am not going to lie I was pretty disturbed when I first saw this post. This could help speed up development and production of the units, wild guess but this might help oculus get closer to market. Lets see what happens, just because oculus got bought out by facebook does not mean it is going to be a facebook product. This point I am about to make people may disagree on. I know as well as does everyone that facebook is evil, but do i still use it? I do actually. Would i use the oculus if it was evil? probably. Good move by facebook actually, but i do fear the future of the oculus.

I can see it now, playing VR farmville, with an influx of invites for other games on the side popping up, in addition to the permanent user targeted ads surrounding the frame. every time you load a game, it asks for permission, to see if it can publish your achievements on your wall/feed, you decline, but it still reads and records your info anyway regardless of what you pick. soon Facebook renames Oculus Rift into FaceVision or FaceScreen or OculusBook or EyeBook. they will add the ability to have apps. mostly so that they can have one main facebook app that prompts you to use a secondary hidden app just to use the chat system. there will be an addition of another smaller screen on the VR itself. that one will be reserved for trending hashtags. your mother, who you added on facebook, will like your games that facebook says you're currently playing and comment about how she didn't raise you that way when she catches you playing questionable titles like VR BSDM Simulator: Leather Strapped Satanic Goats edition.

the future for gaming is here people, what a time to be alive

easy solution. Don't have a facebook account.

second solution. IF they DO push their own non-disabling firmware, PEOPLE WILL HACK IT.
