[WSJ] Facebook to Acquire Oculus - Page 27

I seriously hope that Facebook doesn't add its "zuckerburg touch" because it will be big for a few years and then they'll completely ruin it with dumb crap.

I hope that valve will develop their own product now instead of callobiration with occulus VR, 2 companies competing is usually better than one having monopoly. http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/18/valve-vr-steam-dev-days/

My 2cents.gif

So much FB hate here, I wonder how many of us still have and use our FB accounts on a daily basis.

Lets face it, FB now how to make something big, they know how to keep it alive.

IMO FB are doing this for the money side of things, not instant profit, but a means of securing a long term revenue stream. They probably see VR as the next change / evolution in computers, so why not get in now.

Oculus needed funding, FB has money.

Would you rather Microsoft be the one ? Apple ? Sony ?

Oculus had a recent cash infusion and were doing just fine. The cash from FB will go into Facebook type junk, not the high end gaming nirvana of its previous path. And yes, I'd rather have Microsoft, Apple or Sony have bought them. At least they have decent hardware experience.

A company that revolves around telling you what your sisters best friend had for dinner last night has bought a hardware company. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

I agree with the sentiments that we shouldn't go on a hate campaign against Facebook.
To be fair, businesses do this kind of thing all the time, heck when I had my shop, my and my business partner had a great desire to be bought out by a chain.

It is a worry though and hence not pre-ordering before the new plan for the oculus is in place, because there is no chance at all that the original plan won't be altered.

Branding well if it's got a big thumb on the front it won't matter if it delivers VR in HD on games, as long as they add the social stuff as an addon.

Lets see what comes of it, and echoing what others have noted about system requirements, how they tackle the laptop/tablet marketplace, I do fear a Tegra/bluetooth device with lower quality, but nothing has been released.

Yes, they got a cash infusion. However it was not enough to order screens built FOR the OR. They had to make do with left overs from the cell phone industry. That includes most of the sensors too. Money does not go as far as people think it does in the tech industry. Thinking the 100 million of investment capital was going to change how OR bought stuff would be a joke.

Now that OR has the budget to basicly do whatever they want, they can buy everything they need to make the CV1 as good as possible. Screens built for the OR, Sensors that work flawlessly, and the ability to create those custom parts to make OR the best it can be.

Everyone is just looking at this as Facebook will create popups or stupid gimmicks instead of looking ahead 5-10 years. Honestly it's sad, that not many of us can see the future of this tech. So instead of will bash and hope it fails. Over the parent company? How selfish can one be..haha
post #268 of 383
You got it all backwards. We bash it BECAUSE we can see the possible future of it.

I'm placing bets on onboard hardware to overcome desktop hardware limitations. Hopefully they release multiple models.

Just like Google glass... People will hack Tue Facebook out of it.

Well, thankfully CV1 will be what we all expected without any alteration besides hopefully custom screens and a lighter frame. After that, I suppose I can agree it's up in the air.
So custom screens, what else will change about the spec? Worrying because we don't know, which is funny because we are in an age where we have an insatiable appetite for up to the minute information, which has been partly helped by the likes of Facebook and Twitter, and yet here we are waiting to find out smile.gif
