[WSJ] Facebook to Acquire Oculus - Page 28

I'm placing bets on onboard hardware to overcome desktop hardware limitations. Hopefully they release multiple models.

Just like Google glass... People will hack Tue Facebook out of it.

I agree we'll probably see something onboard. Hopefully in a separate version for the masses.

But as you said, anything with a decently sized following of ultra-techies will be hacked. Even a toaster.

I'm suspending judgement till I get more information from Oculus, but right now my ultra-hype has diminished to cautious optimism.

One thing people need to remember is that they need to sell it to us. Facebook isn't going to make their $2bn back by making a product that no one buys, and you can be sure that they want to see some return on their investment, even if it is a "small" amount for them. Given that VR is very much in its infancy, we are the people that they have to sell it to first. It is very difficult to push new technology into mainstream without the early adopters having good impressions.

Also, as I said on a different thread, if this thing comes out loaded with adds (and I honestly don't think it will) then I give it less than a month before "AdBlock - Rift Version" becomes available.

I would agree for the most part. The only trouble is when upper management at Facebook decides they know what the people want or will accept and then it turns out they were very wrong.

Though the board members and top investors of Oculus have been sounding pretty confident about this deal, so I am thinking it is going to end being OK. Though I still don't know if even with the backing of Facebook if the Oculus Rift will be able to compete against Sony once they get their feet firmly on the VR stage.

And why would a social media company put in the money to fund the 4K @ 120Hz DP 1.3 VR headset future nirvana that every gamer wants? They have no incentive as it's not their business, and the niche profit return would be nothing for such a large company.

Its funny Oculus could have wen to worse companies. Imagine if it went to EA, Ubisoft or Activision.

At first I was a little annoyed by it, but I seen the Jimquisition on this, he brought up good points, I agree with him I think this will go the way of the 3D TVs, its too much effort to use for most people.

It may seem daunting at first for some non computer literate people but the simple "wow" factor after people have tried it may be enough to make them want to get one. I have never tried it myself to my dismay but I have stuck my face to my computer screen while I watch Youtube vids of people using it. Its very blurry but it still gets me excited.

And after sleeping on it I have decided for cautious optimism over this deal. I will order my DK2 when I get the money.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one!

I also tried spanning the video across two screens and doing the "magic eye" type thing with it with limited success.

Businesses expand, buy different companies and spread their chips. Just because They have been a web based company to present why can they not try something else? They don't need to "create" anything. They bought a company full of individuals that are motivated to create this already. They just need to create the framework for it to succeed. Capital for custom parts, press, show casing, TV slots to show off the tech, and more. All things OR could not handle with the limited funding they had. OR relied heavily on the consumers to spread the word and free outlets to keep the hype. Now they can reach a larger group.

An example would be. I've been in the army for 7 years, I know my job like the back of my hand, and can take apart almost every weapon and put it together again without issue.

Now I decide my time is up that I'm going to be a school teacher. Would you say I'm not qualified, or that it's stupid for me to go into a completely different field? That I should stick to law enforcement or security jobs because that's my "skillset"? People can learn new things, the same can be said for a company..Run by people.

2x dp 1.2 would also be sufficient for 4K @ 120hz, this is what i am waiting for and in the meanwhile i will keep using my 110hz 1440p monitor. We will most likely end up having several VR headsets competing and also probably several models of occulus rift in different price classes, i double anything below 4K will be sufficient for VR, most likely it will not be optimal but instead a good compromise, first i will need to get an extra pair of GPU:s

Sony already sells a "3D viewing headset" not much of a leap to turn that into a positional/headtracking unit. Only problem is that i'm pretty sure they are only marketing it towards PS4 right now.
