[WSJ] Facebook to Acquire Oculus - Page 30

For me it's ofc only hearsay as I'm not a Instagrim user myself so do not know nor do I know anything about Instagrims current EULA or TOS conditions.

Ah, I had forgotten about that. I don't use Instagram either but from reading some news articles, it looks like they changed the TOS to give Instagram commercial rights over anything uploaded but reverted to the old TOS shortly after. That is concerning but as far as I know, Instagram hasn't had any issues like that since and it kinda makes me feel that Facebook wouldn't dare risk the same controversy again when Oculus has only sold 75,000 dev kits (Instagram already had 100 million users when it was acquired) and needs to maintain momentum.

I may be wrong and the worst may come to pass, but completely writing off Oculus seems premature until CV1 comes out.

I see lots of these now coming out of the wood work VR companies existing for the soul purpose of being gobbled up by Facebook. Like "True Gamer Gear" or w/e it is called. Or the other one that is using "back panel projection" style technology to prevent screen door pixelation.

i wonder why some people think its a bad thing, its not like facebook is gonna take the tech for themselves and sell it out to the military or something. the guys who made oculus will have more money to work on it, im sure anybody here would have taken an outstanding offer smile.gif
and they deserve it.
You have multiple companies working with the Military when it comes to AR/VR. I'm sure OR is one of them. Selling the product to the military isn't an issue, that would mean it is solid as a rock. The issue is Facebook's typical practice of drowning everything in ads & requiring memberships.

If razer requires you to use their silly software to make use of all your mouse functions, you can damn well be that FB will end up requiring the same thing.

DK2 should come out as planned & CV1 should have few changes, but from there who knows what will happen. I hope they split the line into multiple SKUs. Develop a product angled @ the desktop market, then bring out a second product angled @ the mobile/TV watching/Facebook trolling/Instagram stocking market. I think a "one product to rule them all" would be how they nerf the product for our needs.

One thing is (hopefully) certain. This acquisition will allow them to stick 1440P & higher screens in the device much sooner.

I just got this in my email:
Quote:
Hello everyone,

Please let me apologize for the delays in responding to your support inquiries. Shortly after the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 pre-order launch, we saw an unprecedented volume of support tickets submitted. That day, we started working around the clock and on weekends to make sure that we were responding to as many tickets as possible.

After the announcement of our acquisition by Facebook, we saw another large influx of ticket volume. As we want to make sure to get back to folks with issues from the pre-order launch and those with payment-related inquiries as quickly as possible, it has become necessary to prioritize those tickets. Once we are able to respond to those individuals, we will be getting to all of the other ticket types.

If you submitted feedback on either of these events, we may not reply to you directly, but please know that your feedback is being categorized and is being read. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us and we encourage you to keep sending it in. I can tell you that I am personally reading all of the feedback and am communicating the thoughts and opinions of the our community to the Executive team.

We hope that you are all as excited about the future of VR as everyone here is. It's been a crazy couple weeks, and I want to make sure that you all know that from a Kickstarter backer, to someone who pre-ordered their development kit today, to someone who is just writing in because they are passionate about VR, that you are appreciated, and we're glad that you're here with us.

If you are skeptical due to recent events, I ask that you hang in there with us a little longer. We still have much more to share with you, and we hope that you'll like what you hear and see.

Thank you for your patience and have a wonderful weekend!

I put in a support ticket because my Oculus has a damage screen. This was before the acquisition. I guess they've had a lot of people complaining through their ticketing system so they sent this mass reply. My issue was taken care of though, their support is great. Sad to see Oculus in damage control mode frown.gif

The thing about instragram is that it's not that different from facebook, in the sense that they are both about social networking and sharing photos. What that means is that not a lot need to be changed for instragram and facebook to mesh well together.

VR tech and facebook aren't alike. One is about casual browsing and social networking. The other is about hardcore gaming and immersion, and some could say isolation. Isolation from non game related information. In order for these two contrary ideas to mix, changes have to be made.

As I've said before. You don't buy a open platform hardware company to just make software for it.

If you view VR as strictly a gaming peripheral, then the Facebook purchase really doesn't make sense. Palmer has stated before though, that while he loves gaming, and that is his primary motivation in the short term, VR is so much bigger than just gaming. I would venture that VR has the potential to be more social than social networks are today. Rather than interacting with other people by typing on a keyboard or tapping away on a phone, you could interact with them in a immersive 3D environment complete with audio, hand gestures, eye tracking, etc.

The technology for that kind of experience is in its infancy right now though but gamers are willing to put up with the rough edges in order to improve their gaming experience and that will drive the technology forward until it is ready for the masses. It will be a few years before the technology is there to start realizing the social networking potential on a large scale so that's a big reason why I'm not too worried Facebook will mess with Oculus's gaming ambitions until then.

I'm not saying that VR is and will only ever be gaming focused. I'm saying in it's current state it is gaming focused. I also said that if FB wanted to write software to utilize the OR for purposes other then gaming they could without the necessity of purchasing the company. The OR is a very open platform. And as far as I understand no licensing was required. FB could have written any software they wanted and saved $2B in the process.

You don't buy an open platform hardware company just to write software. You buy a hardware company to control the hardware.

You also buy it to grow & cultivate the hardware. Zucker wants to move beyond stalking via text. He wants to build virtual bars, movie theaters, virtual coffee shops, so on and so forth. Either way, they may require a facebook account in the future, but that doesn't mean you are going to be spammed by ads unless you cheap out on the model you get. I assume most people bashing FB+OR actually have facebook accounts, but people like me can just create a throw away email + a troll facebook account then call it a day.
