Nova TEC iceprobe enough?

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

So I have VERY little experience with TECs and kinda decided they are not very efficient from my first "go" at it but then I found this "ice probe" from Nove TEC, Im just not sure how efficient it would be in a pc system since their specs revolve around aquarium use and it seems to only offer 50watts of cooling. Im not expecting miracles but before commiting $150 or so to this I would love to hear from people who know more than I do biggrin.gif

Here is the product page...
Nove TEC iceprobe info

I was at a local vendor and got some pics of the unit, would be SUPER easy to implement, just need a 1.25" hole drilled into a reservoir with at least 3 1/8" of clearance for the probe.

So I guess my question for those who are very familiar with TECs is what kind of cooling power can I expect from one of these? I think I would be VERY happy with a 10c drop temps, but even a 5c might be worth it since it may be cheaper or at least the same as a good 360mm radiator and fans for said radiator addition.

Thanks in advance!

You will not get much of a temp drop at all with one of your tbose in your reservoirs. 50w just isnt enough.

you may lower water temps by a degree or 2 in your loop.

Yikes, may reconsider this. I may try this in the future but man almost seems adding a 360mm will be better.

yeah it's a really cool idea, I would be tempted to try anyway, but with the low amount of surface area on that cold plate side, I just don't see it doing much water chilling. If you want a chiller have you considered building one out of an A/C window unit and a cooler or a minifridge?

For over a decade I wanted to mount a radiator inside a minifridge!

Not sure when your last attempt was but TECs have gotten a lot more efficient than they used to be. The thing is you need to remove AT LEAST as much heat as your devices are generating. If you're looking for high efficiency cooling an evap cooler is your best bet, if you're looking for high power high efficiency cooling a phase change chiller is your best bet, if you're looking for high power compact cooling TEC chillers are the route to go. The nice thing about TECs is they are compact and easy to use. No special knowledge on plumbing, no loud or spacious compressor needed, nothing like that. Obviously there's not going to be a universally superior method.

YEah my ideal goal would have been a 10c drop in liquid temps, but im guessing if one of those units is worth 50watts of heat dissipation, Im guessing I would need like 3 of them to do that while still using the items currently in the loop. I cant help but still wanting to try what 1 will do but might need to wait a bit since its a gamble rather than sure thing.

Honestly I'd just build an Evap cooler, I doubt one of these things would do much to even a single CPU unless you're computer is idling. If it's idling of course your temps are going to be low as there's almost no heat being dumped, but as soon as you fire it up the heat will keep going higher. You really can't have TECs in the same loop as a rad, so if your TEC chillers aren't moving all the heat being generated the heat will keep increasing more and more.

So yeah, I doubt one of these bullets would be a good investment, it's a neat idea but probably not worth the $$
