9590 with Sabertooth 990FX R 2.0 vs Crosshair

So I have a 9590 on a Sabertooth 990FX 2.0, and I'm having trouble obtaining stability above 5.0 Ghz.

@ 5 gigs I need to be pushing over 1.48 volts in order to run Prime for at least 30 minutes. However, when I clock it back down to 4.9 I can run Prime for 2 hours @ 1.42-1.43 volts. So this got me thinking...

I noticed that the crosshair boards has the 8+4 CPU pin for overclocking purposes. Could it be possible that I'm hitting a wattage wall with my sabertooth (only 8 pin)? I've seen some threads of people hitting 5.3-5.4 with their 9590's on crosshairs. My CPU and VRM's are watercooled so temps are definitely acceptable.

The real question here is why don't you just use more voltage on what you have? CPUs vary and there isn't any guarantee that if you get a 9590 that it won't be needing 1.5v+.

I just thought it was a bit strange that 4.9 to 5.0 justifies an extra ~.06 volts and was wondering if my board could be having an impact on that.

What he said ^

the max voltage according to http://sites.amd.com/us/documents/amd_fx_performance_tuning_guide.pdf is 1.55v

I don't have any issues running on the 8 pin alone on my CHV-Z , not sure there is a difference on the sabre.

However I would also say it's perfectly normal to have to run higher voltage than 1.48 to prime at 5ghz.

My 9370 needs about 1.52 volts to prime all cores at 5 ghz. Technically , its undervolted as the vid is 1.53 even so it generates plenty of heat.

When you get up there it can keep taking larger and larger voltage steps depending on leakage of the chip. The only way to really know if your board can handle it is by trying. Does it justify the risk---that's up to you and you only. I'm way too curious so I'd be pushing it until I couldn't cool it.

not really, when you think about how heat increases logarithmically as an overclock increases, and not linearly, so that the higher you go jumping a few mhz will create more of a delta in temps than at a lower clock speed, and also the needs for a voltage bump may be more than what was needed to increase clock speed at a lower frequency.

My FX-4100 needed something assinine like 1.7v to stabilize 5GHz despite remaining cool. Now I'm tdp limited on this 760K and it's even more fustrating.

lol

When I'm looking at temps should I be concerning myself with the socket temps as much as I am with the core temps?
