Audio through both headphones and speakers

Thread Starter
Hey guys. So i bought a splitter so i could plug both my headphones and speakers in at the same time (since my speakers front right/front left jack uses the same jack needed for headphones). Problem is it isnt working. I have 5.1 surround speakers set on entertainment mode and headphones are selected in game mode. But either mode i use sound plays through both. I have the option ticked for "When headphone jack is connected: Automatically mute speakers" which works fine in muting the speakers when i unplug the (1 of 3) speaker jacks and plug the headphones in. But now that both headphones and speakers are connected through the same jack it isnt.

Any advice on getting this to work please? I really need to be able to use headphones and speakers when i want without draggin out the 150lb PC unit to change plugs every time.

Specs in sig btw.

A splitter? Like one of the Y splitters you plug both into, off one jack? Electrically, there is no difference. It looks like the same device. The jack is not capable of detecting which device is connected, only that one IS.

Some speakers have a headphone port, I gather yours does not.

I know there IS something out there that can help, but it just escapes me for the moment. But at least now I hope you understand why it does not work lol.
I take it you're using a 3.5mm jack for both your speakers and headphones?

If you use a splitter, it splits the signal so audio will always be sent to both devices, no option in software will change that.

What you need is an audio switch, such as this one. This will let you change between outputs.

Seriously? Bah! someone on here told me a Y splitter would work. Is there no cheaper option then what you posted?

There may be some cheaper options elsewhere, you'll have to have a shop around. You just need a 3.5mm audio splitter.

A splitter works but you'll just have to turn the speakers off when you aren't using them.

Yes but then audio comes through headphones when i want to use speakers. No good.

Well they do but the headphone plug is attached to the main right speaker rather than the bass (horrible setup, everything should just go to the bass) and id have to unplug every time to use either one. I was hoping for a software solution. Not to mention that speaker is too far away to plug the headphones into.

But i suppose i could buy another extension so i can easily plug and unplug the headphones. In order to do that though id need a 10-12 foot extension in addition to my headphones about 9 foot cord.

2 questions with that option:
1: Will i keep my ad700s exceptional sound stage with that distance?
2: Since the speakers are plugged into the sound card will i keep the same quality running my headphones through the speaker jack (which is plugged to sound card) compared to if the headphones were plugged directly to the card?

Thank you.

PS: Speakers are logitech x-530s

Why don't you plug your head phones into the front panel audio? You run the header to the pins on your sound card or mother board and then when you plug into the front the software will acknowledge the new devise mute the other if you are set up that way. then you would unplug the headset and the speakers should work again.

Alternatively you could leave both plugged in and then switch between the two as your default device.

Hmm didnt think about that. Now that you mention it i remember something about my X-Fi Titanium having a connection for front panel. Have you any idea if the card came with the necessary wire (retail box) or if that would have to be bought? Im not sure if it came with it and the box is probably around here somewhere but id have to find in my storage.

But i've also heard of distortion coming from using an extension to front panel audio in soundcards?

I use (what is more or less) a USB DAC. my Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 has two headphone outs (each with independent volume control) as well as a "monitor" out (speakers) with it's own volume control. Their 2i2 ($150 USD) also has the ability to drive speakers and headphones, each with their own volume controls.

The solution twerk mentioned is a lot cheaper though ^_^

Other sound cards have software switching, so you can leave everything plugged directly into the card and switch through the interface. I think the creative Z does this, someone correct me if I'm wrong. You don't want to use splitters or a switch, because you will either end up not getting 5.1 to your speakers or having to run your headphones off the speaker line output.
