This isn't a new report, its based off of the original NYTs article. The Verge latched on to a few key words to be able to write another
article about the acquisition.
Here is the relevant quote from the original NYT article:
About 40 percent of the time that people spend online on computers is on gaming, Mr. Zuckerberg said, and 40 percent is on social communication.
“You need to fuse both of those together,” he said.
According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo.
I'm unsure how they can stay "independent" while also having Facebook branded gear and "fusing" the two techs together. Sounds like Mark is trying to woo both his investors and appease the current Oculus fan base with double talk. It will be interesting to see how this ends up.
